September 15 1789 - September 14 1851. His novel, The Last of the Mohicans, is usually regarded as his best piece of work. No less than six films have been made in Hollywood that were based on the novel. The first was made in 1912, then one in 1920, again in 1932 and 1936, then in 1963 and finally the last one in 1992.
