In the Batman comic strip, District Attorney Harvey Dent is horribly scarred by acid meant for the Joker, thrown by an unhinged loner named Jack E. Estrada. While recovering, Dent--who had already been displaying personality changes in the days before his scarring--becomes obsessed with duality and luck, with good and evil, and finds peace in the idea that he's a pawn of fate. When the bandages are removed and the horrifying extend of Dent's injuries are revealed, he decides to scar one side of the coin given to him by Bruce, to ensure that he can now take fate into his own hands. He then attempts to come forward with the wire-tapping, his duplicitous assistant blackmails Harvey into staying silent, and letting the assistant take over as the new D.A., not realizing that the man he's trying to threaten is no longer Harvey Dent, but Two-Face.
