    One of the greatest real-life escape artists and magicians was Harry Houdini. He was born in 1874. His family emigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1880. They lived in Appleton, Wisconsin. He began his career as a magician with little fanfare or success in 1890. In 1899, in St. Paul, MN, Houdini met Martin Beck.
