    Austria existed as a March from 976 to 1156, a Duchy from 1156 to 1359, an Archduchy from 1359 to 1804 and a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1804 to 1918. The First Austrian Republic existed from 1918 to 1938, when annexed by Nazi Germany. The Second Austrian Republic was established in 1945, though it remained under Allied occupation to 1955. Modern Austria is a member of the European Union. The Capital and largest city is Vienna.

    Austria borders Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia and Hungary.
