Off My Mind: Has DC Revealed The Future of the DCU?

 Dun dun duuuuun!
Everyone likes teasers and DC has given us yet another possible peak at the future of the DC Universe. You might recall that Rip Hunter, the time traveling hero, kept a couple chalkboards with all his crazy scribblings about events from different periods in his time lab. When Booster Gold came across them, "Time is Broken" was plastered across the top. Whether or not these notes have any meaning depends on the precautions taken to change the impending events. Looks like he's not done writing things down.

In this week's Time Masters: Vanishing Point #6 (and on yesterday's The Source), we saw new notes. Rip, Booster Gold and Goldstar returned to the lab. Goldstar insisted she ran a security sweep after the Time Stealers left. Rip was concerned with the breach due to all the equipment he has from different time periods. Despite the reassurance that nothing was touched, Rip discovered that his chalkboard contained events that could happen, only he did not write them down.

Who wrote then and what do they mean? Let's consider some of these dire proclamations.
 == TEASER ==
A previous look at the chalkboards

Why did it have to be BRUCE?

Ooh, what could this mean? We can assume this is Bruce as in "Bruce Wayne." He just returned after the heroes thought he died. Now that he's safe and sound, could this mean there is another danger around the corner for Batman? Or maybe he accidentally wins the lottery and someone is bummed because he's already a billionaire.

S!H!A!Z!A!M!

Something should be happening to the Marvel Family very soon. I haven't been thrilled since the wizard Shazam died, Billy/Captain Marvel replaced him and Freddie/Captain Marvel Jr. became the new Captain Marvel. We've recently seen that Billy and Mary don't have thier powers and Osiris is a powder keg about to explode...something is going to happen soon.

Where is SUPERMAN?

I think we already know the answer to that. He's busy walking across America.

CAPTAIN COLD = HERO?

This is a crazy one. Sure Captain Cold has his own set or morals but he's done a lot of bad things. We should definitely be seeing what this is about since Time Masters is said to continue in Flashpoint #2 (along with Booster Gold #44).

Abin Sur: savior!

It always seemed that Abin Sur's story was simple. He was a Green Lantern, his ship crashed on Earth, his ring sought out Hal Jordan and he died. Years later we saw (during the Sinestro Corps War) that he discovered a prophecy about Blackest Night and the Emotional Spectrum (if only he managed to tell Hal!). Is there more to Abin Sur's story that we still haven't seen? What would make him a savior now? Then again, if this deals strictly with Flashpoint, we saw that teaser asking "What if the spaceship never crashed?" Erik brought up the possibility that it could be dealing with Abin Sur's ship not crashing on Earth.

WONDER WOMAN: PRINCESS OF WAR

Again, going with the Flashpoint teasers, we see that Wonder Woman and Aquaman have an arranged marriage to prevent war. Wonder Woman is already dealing with messed up timelines in her own series since the gods changed the timeline for their own reasons. We also saw in The Flash #6 that there was a paradox involving Wonder Woman.

How does his white chalk write in black?
Clearly the more we think about this, the more likely this is all about Flashpoint and those teasers. It's been stated that Flashpoint is not an alternate Earth and the stories are taking place in the proper DC Universe. We'll have to wait and see how these changes occur and what repercussions they'll have once Flashpoint is wrapped up. Is there anything Rip Hunter and Booster Gold to prevent the crazy changes?

Which one of these chalkboard messages sparked your interest the most? What do you think the others (that I didn't touch on) mean?

The Changing Man! Maybe that means the 4th Shade trade is out soon. ;o)
#3 Posted by FLStyle (368 posts) - - Show Bio

Everything is obviously a paradox caused by the white chalk writing in black.

@Chane: I believe Shade's going to be in the Secret Seven Flashpoint miniseries.

Hopefully Freddy dies and Billy regains the mantle of Shazam!

@johnnie619:
Not really since Rip Hunter's Blackboard has been appearing in Booster's series before Avengers #5.

But anyways this is all very interesting and im just happy that Jurgens and Rapmund will be coming back on the book on issue #44.Also "The Rampage of the Creature Commandos !" is pretty clear that it's a reference to what happened in Generation Lost recently.

No. Worrying about Doctor's 1-12 would be thinking too small.

HAHA, definately

What one are you most curious about G-Man?

The "Bruce" in question doesn't have to be Bruce Wayne. It could very well be Bruce Gordon. That chalk scribble could be alluding to Eclipso's return in the pages of Justice League of America.

Maybe "where is Superman" is written on the board because Dc is gonna lose him soon........or did they win??

#13 Posted by G-Man (30645 posts) - - Show Bio
@QuantomMan: Mostly the ones I mentioned. Abin Sur, S!H!A!Z!M!, Captain Cold but also THE CHANGING MAN, Free Subject 1 (is that the captured alien Superman?). I kind of wish these didn't strictly deal with Flashpoint but we'll have to wait and see.

@buttersdaman000: I think DC won that case.

You know I was thinking something similar about the Changing Man. Might be interesting

I was getting the feeling from the podcast last Friday that you weren't terribly crazy about Flashpoint. Is it cause it's not in a separate universe?

It's a Geoff Johns penned story; Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman will all get screwed, with only Superman gaining some measure of victory, then Barry and Hal (and maybe some other Silver Age characters) will come along and save everyone. A bunch of old stories will disappear and we will be told, once again, that Wally and Kyle "just aren't that great". Every other writer won't really care and will continue with their own arcs and Geoff, possibly Tomasi too, will follow on from this in their books.

Meanwhile, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Tony Bedard, Gail Simone, JT Krul, Judd Winnick and everyone else at DC will continue being awesome. Not JMS though, who knows what the hell he's thinking at the moment.

Capt. Cold = Hero? I like that. Anything to do with the Rogues has my interest peaked.

This is definitely all about Flashpoint

"God bless THE CYBORG."  That's what caught my attention the most.  Obviously its open ended.  Makes me wonder if it is involving Vic Stone, though I'm not for certain he's been in any big things as of late.  Another alternative is that this is dealing with Cyborg Superman Hank Henshaw, and what leads me to believe that is what his role might be in the progressing "Reign of Doomsday" arc. All around interesting nevertheless, and I have yet to read this issue!

Will be giving this a look.

Great DC in more confusing the usually. Yet I guess may led up to a another huge crossover event that end up with DC changing the entire universe again( really just to clean up the last set of continuity messes).

His chalk can write black because it's from the FUTURE. Duh.

Doctor Thirteen?  As in the Doctor Thirteen from Tales of the Unexpected?  Awesome.  I love that guy.

#26 Posted by Midnight Monk (225 posts) - - Show Bio

Enough with the chalkboards already!?

#27 Posted by Eyz (3095 posts) - - Show Bio

I love Rip Hunter and his crazy writing!
Seriously though, who takes notes like this?? Can you re-read yourself (can he??)?

It all seems to be Flashpoint-related notes.
Even the Where is Superman (from the teasers he seemed to be captured)

#28 Posted by GraveSp (318 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm more wondering about the Ask Booster one.  It is centered and underlined three times.  Really I don't really care this stuff only makes sense after everything is done

Why did it have to be BRUCE?

I think Batman Inc. is gonna turn into "Big Brother" and Batman is gonna turn into a Lex Luther type.
or maybe Bruce is going to have to fake his death after semi-revealing hisself in Inc. by saying that he funds Batman. or maybe as a result of that he dies.

Is Superman still taking his walk? Really?

#38 Posted by Adam Michaels (435 posts) - - Show Bio

Why did it have to be Bruce?

I have a feeling it has something to do with Final Crisis. There might be a reason behind why it was he who was captured by Darkseid and then "killed". And seeing as Rip Hunter, a TIME TRAVELER, is concerned, it could very well have someting to do with Bruce being sent back in time for The Return of Bruce Wayne. There might be more to it than we've already been told.

Just a thought!

Some of these are probably just the usual fan-teases, because not everything that was shown on the chalkboards in 52 came to pass. Just there to keep us guessing.

#45 Posted by leokearon (1759 posts) - - Show Bio

What an original idea /sarcasm

Still I wonder if any of these of anything to do with Flashpoint

"The Heroine of GEM WORLD Returns!"

Either AMANDA CONNER got my message from WonderCon'10, or DC is finally bringing AMETHYST out in her 21st century appearance.

@AMP - Seeker of Lost Knowledge:
yeah, but the good one or the alternate version bad one?

@queenfrost_:

actually, Rip's chalkboard has been used a few times before
before Marvel did the same thing

I remember seeing "John Paul Valley Lives!" on one.  I always hoped he would come back as Azrael.

#49 Posted by The Qu (41 posts) - - Show Bio

These are all nods to Flashpoint. The Changing Man is a reference to Millligan using Shade in Secret Seven. S!H!A!Z!A!M! is likely a nod to the (as of yet unconfirmed) Shazam Agents mini.  Wonder Woman: Princess of War in reference to Wonder Woman and The Furues, Subject 1 and Where Is Superman? likely in reference to Project: Superman, Abin Sur: Saviour the Abin mini, Creature Commandos the Frankenstein flashpoint mini, Captain Cold the Citizen Cold mini, etc.

Some of those look kind of interesting...
