Each week we pick out some comic book collectibles and take them out of the package to see how cool they really are. This next one was released a little bit ago but that doesn't mean it's not still cool. Let's find out how the box set for the Flashpoint figures is.

    No Caption Provided

Even though this is a DC Direct set, the box comes in another box. The white box is similar to the MattyCollector Signature Series for 'adult collectors.' It's a plain white box with simple lettering but the other side does have a cool picture from the story arc.

    No Caption Provided

In case you're unaware or have forgotten, Flashpoint was the precursor to the New 52. Long story short, Barry Allen woke up in an altered timeline and the whole DCU was turned upside down. As he tried to stop Reverse Flash and fix everything, he came upon different versions of the heroes.

This box set is an online exclusive the DC shop. It originally was $60 but the price has been slashed.

    No Caption Provided

Inside the white box you can see the figures included. The set contains a regular version of Barry Allen as the Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Batman. We'll go more into detail on their differences in just a bit.

The back of the box gives some covers from the miniseries.

    No Caption Provided

Each figure comes with their own stand. Some of them don't necessarily need it (like Flash) but it does help for figures like Wonder Woman or Batman where their capes weigh them down a little.

Starting the the Flash, you'll see he's the simple plain version of the Flash. It's actually a little weird looking at this figure after the current New 52 version.

The thing I don't like but also like at the same time is his boots. They look pretty bulky. But I do like that they are bulky as it's a reminder of the way they used to be. I am digging the streamlined New 52 costumes but it's almost as if comics were a little different in the old days.

Wonder Woman was more of a warrior in the Flashpoint world. Her war against the Atlantians resulted in the deaths of many innocents in Western Europe. By looking at her, you can tell she meant business.

Aquaman had a rough time in the Flashpoint world as well. War and the death of loved ones will do that to you. If that wasn't enough, poor guy has a nasty scar on his face. The darker color of his top and black pants makes him look pretty cool. Aquaman has become very cool in the New 52 world but you can clearly see that he's a pretty tough guy here.

And finally there's Batman. This isn't the Batman you're familiar with. This is actually Thomas Wayne. In the Flashpoint world, Thomas survived that dreadful night. He became Batman for certain reasons and had a more serious and violent approach to crimefighting. His alter ego ran Wayne Casinos (which I'm surprised does not have a page here on ComicVine...)

Now how about a group shot?

You might have noticed on the box that it mentions and shows the exclusive $500 Wayne Casino chip included in this set.

The Wayne Casino chips were given out in 2011. They came in denominations of $1, $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100. I managed to get all except the rare $100 one. Here they all are:

    No Caption Provided

Again, only the $500 chip is included.

That's it for this week. We'll have another spotlight on some collectibles next week.

I regret not getting the Thomas Wayne figure when I could. I do have the Flash figure, but mine always falls, even with the stand.

Granted I've never read Flashpoint through (I have skimmed it at the bookstore though), but I miss Thomas Wayne as Batman a little. We got less not killing villains so they can escape from Arkham in about twelve seconds and more justice. And as we all know, if there is one thing that gives Batman a Batsmile, it is justice.

I agree with you 100%! It was a tight story, which used tie-ins effectively. For all of Marvel's talk about only needing the core books to enjoy Fear Itself (which I'd argue was not true - Journey Into Mystery was paramount to the story), DC actually delivered on making an accessible event.

Even the physical issues themselves had excellent production values - I have a weakness shiny covers

Kevin Conroy let it slipped that he finished recording voices for a Flash-centric movie which he said was Flashpoint.

The figurines are cool, but I think Flashpoint was terrible.

It makes absolutely no sense that the death of the Flashes mother would result in Atlantis being at war with Europe, or Thomas Wayne adopting the mantle of the bat (what was his motivation) or that his wife would be the joker...or that it would result in the merging of several universes...

It was a subpar elseworlds story....it should never have been what it was.

@MuyJingo: It does and it doesn't. The butterfly effect works on the principle that one small change can change almost anything and everything about the world. For example, What if Flash's mother inspires someone to do something, and they in turn inspire someone else, who inspires someone else, who inspires Steve Trevor to change his career, thus never finding Wonder Woman. Although Flash's mother dying has nothing to do with Wonder Woman going to war with Atlantis, Steve never meeting her could be seen to have a significant effect. (That's me playing devil's advocate.)

However, how can Bruce and Thomas decide the same mantle? I suppose it still does make some sense. Bruce was inspired by the bats around Wayne manner and Alfred must have had some input into the costume for both. But, yes you are right, the sheer amount of diverse changes coming from the Flash's mother dying is crazy. His Mother becoming the Joker is another story - pure coincidence, perhaps?

I am not disagreeing with you, though. The one change that I feel cannot be explained, is Abin Sur not dying. How can what happens on Earth effect Abin Sur's life?

I think by keeping a lot of stuff in Flashpoint vague does give the writers a lot of poetic licence. But you make a good point!

Dude first have you ever heard of the butterfly effect? And second it's a comic book.

It's an amazing story, as well as the tie-ins. How can you say it's terrible!!??!

@Green_Tea_Light: I'm very familiar with the butterfly effect (over and misused as it is) and the intricacies of time travel in fiction. I think you mainly agree with with me...the things like Abin Sur not dying is a great example. Flashes mother not dying should explain some thing, but it certainly should have had no impact on things that happened before she died. Steve Trevor met WW before FlashMom died in pre new 52 continuity right? Then why would her not dying retcon that?

@Mucklefluga: I think it was terrible because it seems like no thought was put into it. Just "how about we do this cause it seems cool"? I expected more from it, especially since it was the excuse to relaunch the universe.

That's exactly what I was going to say. They made almost no effort whatsoever to make him resemble his appearance in the series. He basically looks like every other Aquaman figure but with a scar.
