A Character Portrait of a Bored Monster 0

The opening page of Grodd of War, a character-centric one-shot tie-in to Flashpoint, seems to be making a socio-political statement. A bemused President Grodd sits upon a pile of carcasses, ruminating on how his conquest of Africa seems to be less impactful than the war that is ripping Western Europe apart. It is a rather startling commentary on how skewed the Western perspective of the political climate in the world is, and how our European and American perspective can easily overlook human rig...

The Ape Who Would be King 0

I truly believe that this was a great issue.   A great stand alone piece.  I am not familiar with Sean Ryan but he makes a great mark on this one off issue.  The great thing about what Ryan does is that he tells a great character piece.  It's a day in the life of Gorilla Grodd in this Flashpoint universe.   What the issue does successfully: Tell a dark and morbid story in one issue.Emphasize the importance of Flash to Gorilla Grodd.Defines Grodd as cold, savage, and formidable.Leaves a great seg...

    Africa of the Apes. 0

Flashpoint: Grodd of War-one shot. Ok well first off I'd like to say that I bought this because I never really read anything with Grodd in it before but from what I remembered from Justice League the animated series I really wanted to read this. From what I read this seems just like the way he was in the show except a bit more bored and savage (very savage). Grodd now rules Africa in the midst of all this chaos within Flashpoint. Grodd has become very upset and bored because no one knows him or ...

    He's not a monkey, he's an ape 0

Grodd has won. Africa is his. Every living being on the entire continent is under his rule. Still, the gorilla with the psychic powers is frustrated. He wants more. He wants fame.  The Good The art. Ig Guara - who has an awesome name, by the way - delivers very good art. Grodd looks menacing and frustrated at the same time. Given the fact that Guara is probably used to drawing humans and does that way more often than he draws gorillas in cars with helmets on who happen to have the ape-equivalent...

    A Nice Surprise 0

Flashpoint: Grodd of War" is a DC one-shot that manages to give the reader a taste of the state of Africa in the warped world of Flashpoint.  Sean Ryan writes this one-shot that doesn't feel or end like a one-shot. Obviously Grood will have a role to play as Flashpoint continues and this issue serves more as a character study of a brutal, savage king who can't get his fill of war. Ryan's story is good and I was surprised at how much I liked the issue. But there are scenes that didn't resonate wi...
