Maybe I'm sexist??
I really was looking forward to this book. I have fond childhood memories of this character from my childhood. Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends was one of my favourite cartoons as a kid.
I remember Firestar being cheeky, sassy, and fun, so that's what I was looking forward to. It's not what I got. This book was thouroughly depressing. Firestar it seems has been through the mill over the past few years. She's now recovering from cancer, and struggling socially and financially. Her woes don't end here. Her fathers new girlfriend has a daughter on a self destruct path.
This is where the book lost me. It was all touchy feely, and emotional. Does that make me sexist? That's what I wondered while I read this book. I don't want my comics to be fluffy stories and feelings. there's certainly a place for that, and I like my heroes to show their humanity, but not for 95% of a book. I'm all for strong female role models too. I have a six year old daughter and I want her to have heroic women to look up to. This book, is not the way to go about it.
I have to give credit for the art. It's the only good thing about this book. As for the rest of it.... I wish I hadn't bothered.
If you're looking for a female led book that's fun, well written, and potrays women in a positive light, go read Power Girl.
