A Mixed Bag in terms of Quality

This volume is more difficult to review, because instead of containing one united story it contains four smaller, independent ones. Therefore, I’ll give my thoughts on each story independently, before sharing my opinion on the volume as a whole:

Final Crisis #1: Director’s Cut is an interesting, but not essential read. The uncoloured version of the first issue of Final Crisis didn’t do much for me, as I’d already read the issue in its final form, but seeing the original script offered a couple new insights and I really enjoyed reading the page-by-page notes of Morrison and Jones. Seeing the events of the issue from their perspective made me re-examine things I’d simply glanced over and gave me a greater appreciation for the issue on the whole. I’d recommend this issue to any fans of either creator or to people who love behind the scenes types of things, like special features or director’s commentary on a DVD.

Final Crisis: Secret Files is a simple one issue origin story for Libra and how he came to work for Darkseid. I found this issue fairly forgettable, it just didn’t do much for me. His origins just seemed so cliché and uninspired, and really didn’t matter to the rest of the Final Crisis storyline.

Final Crisis: Requiem was by far my favourite of the four issues. I don’t want to give anything away, but suffice it to say it acted as a powerful testament to J’onn as a character, his history in the DC Universe and showed just how deeply he will be missed by everyone. Peter Tomasi, who wrote this story, did a superb job, and if DC were ever to do a new solo series for him in the future he would be my top choice to write it, based on this issue.

Final Crisis: Resist was an OK story, but nothing special. It showed what Checkmate, Mr. Terrific and Snapper Carr were up to, and it had some OMACs in it, so if you really like any of those things then you’ll probably like it, but I’m not particularly attached to any of them so it didn’t mean much. I thought the story would have a greater effect on the main Final Crisis story, but once I finished reading Final Crisis I felt like this issue wasn’t important to have read to follow everything that was going on. It’s not bad or anything, just unimportant.

The volume on the whole was definitely a mixed bag, with one great story (Requiem), one that was somewhat interesting (Director’s Cut), and two I didn’t really care about (Secret Files and Resist). I’d say that the main Final Crisis story and all three of the other Final Crisis tie-ins were better reads than this, but that the strength of Requiem as a story makes this volume OK on the whole, even if it’s not one I’d highly recommend you’d go out and buy or that I’d say is an essential addition to anyone’s collection.
