Full Plot

Prelude: Book of the Skull

In the Egyptian desert, Sin and Baron Zemo seek out Sin's father's ( The Red Skull) hidden journal about his greatest failure. After defeating her father's robot guards, Sin relates the story about her father's greatest failure. Back in 1942, The Red Skull with the aid of Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker had come across a gypsy camp that spoke about a long lost fear god. The Red Skull had these gypsies kill several Atlantean citizen to fashion a book that would help call this fear god to Earth. The ritual is performed by the Thule Priest and a bolt of lightning flashes across the sky, but whatever came down did not end up near Red Skull's location. The Invaders discover the Red Skull's plan and Namor, Bucky and Captain America track the Red Skull and his men to Antarctica. In a rage about the death and mutilation of his people, Namor attacks the Nazis on the ground but is soon attacked by a large blue demon. After a long battle, the demon was forced into the cold water and Bucky used a grenade to blow off its head, killing it. The Red Skull retreats with Baron Strucker, saying the Invaders had not grabbed the true prize and the two return to Germany. However, it is a ruse, a mystic hammer similar to Mjolnir had landed in the Arctic and the Red Skull's men built a fortress around it and after many decades, the hammer remained because no one worthy enough could lift it.

After the tale, Zemo and Sin escape the collapsing base and Sin soon betrays Zemo, destroying his teleporter disc and stealing his ship. Zemo watches saying that he hopes Sin gets what she wants because if she doesn't, she had made a new enemy and he will take care of her. Sin soon gathers her men and heads towards her father's old base to claim the hammer.

Fear itself begins:

She kills all of Zemo's men trying to stop her, but when she lifts the hammer... the Serpent, brother of odin awakens and frees himself from his prison claiming that Odin isn't the true father of all, he summons seven more hammers to chose some worthy people to become his heralds:

Hulk (Bruce Banner) found his hammer in Brazil as he told Red She-Hulk to run away as he turned into Nul, breaker of worlds.

Juggernaut sees his hammer falling and crashing on the raft , he turs into Kuurth , breaker of stone, he then destroys the raft, which allows every imprisoned villain to escape.

Titania found her hammer while she and Absorbing Man were digging in South Africa. She then lead him to where he would find his hammer, having to face War Machine in the process. they become Skirn: Breaker of Men and Greithoth: Breaker of Wills.

Attuma finds his in the ocean and destroys every pipeline and every lifeform he sees with it.

Grey Gargoyle fins his and become Mokk: Breaker of Faith, he uses his updated powers to turn Paris to stone.

The Thing finds his as he was working with the future foundation in Yancy Street.

Sin gathers her Nazi troops and attacks Washington and New York... leading her army of robots into a rampage. the Avengers and Thor make a speech to calm everyone,it does not works well and tne watcher pops up in the asgard ruins. Odin loses his temper and threaten the watcher to fight him when Thor arrives and asks for help from asgard. Odin refuses and a fight erupts between father and son, which results in thor being knocked out. Odin gathers the asgardians and goes back in space.

This "Marvel Comics Presents" style anthology features chapters of 3 separate stories, plus a one-page short.

*Speedball in "Lurker", part 1 of 7 - by Christos Gage & Mike Mayhew

-"Avengers Academy" writer Christos Gage takes Speedball on a solo adventure in which his true identity is found out while he's performing incognito community service for the good of Stamford, CT.  The story begins with Speedball working with Avengers trainees Hazmat and Mettle, taking down a few C-list supervillains who, the issue later points out, were just a few among many who took the opportunity to attempt some easy crimes while law enforcement was busy dealing with the riot depicted in "Fear Itself" book 1.  With the situation under control, Speedball heads to Stamford to continue the social service work he's been doing, but he's found out by the leader of the organization he's working for, Miriam Sharpe (who worked closely with Iron Man on the registration act during the Civil War) , and another riot ensues as angry townsfolk attack him.  The whole story is overlaid with a televised debate on related subjects by reporters Trish Tilby and Marcy Pearson.

*Jimmy Woo in "The Age of Anxiety", part 1 of 7 - by Peter Milligan & Elia Bonetti

-Jimmy Woo and the Agents of Atlas weather the riots and miscellaneous hate crimes spinning out of "Fear Itself" by rounding up and taking down Neo-Nazi organizations, until they find one that leads them to the Thule organization that's at the heart of "Fear Itself".  In the midst of this, Jimmy is trying to decide how to handle, or even outright end his secret romance with teammate Namora.  NOTE: this is perhaps the first "Agents of Atlas" story not written by team re-inventor Jeff Parker.

*"A Moment With J. Jonah Jameson" by Howard Chaykin

-This one-page short, written and illustrated by industry legend Howard Chaykin features mayor Jameson reflecting on how these anti-hero riots are in some way his old wish come true, but it doesn't seem to be resting completely easy with him.

-Broxton, OK in "There's No Place Like Homeless" by Jim McCann & Pepe Larraz

-In this one-off story, the normal human residents of Broxton, OK deal with the fallout of what happened to their town after Norman Osborn's siege on Asgard destroyed much of their property, and now, the Asgardians abandoning Earth on top of that.

Thunderbolts #158

FEAR ITSELF TIE-IN! When the Fear Itself hammer falls, The Raft is raised by one of its most powerful prisoners with a newfound weapon of the gods! Now the Thunderbolts will begin to learn the true meaning of FEAR ITSELF! Frank Tieri, Jen Van Meter & Joe Caramanga join series writer Jeff Parker to give us all side of the story as the Thunderbolts try to hold themselves and their world together against tide of anarchy!

The Thunderbolts main team (minus Juggernaut) and the new reserve team fight alongside one another against a horde of zombies in Iraq.

Reserve team members Boomerang and Shocker both are swarmed and nearly killed in the battle, no thanks to Centurius, who could have saved both of them but became too distracted with the scientific endeavor of examining the brain of a decapitated zombie.

During the battle, back at the Raft, one of the Serpent's hammers crashes down and is swiftly claimed by the angry and demoralized Juggernaut, who (off panel) quickly sets himself, as Kuurth of the chosen, to leveling approximately half of the Raft facility. This allows for the biggest supervillain prison break since the first arc of "New Avengers". Here we see the escapes of multiple villains who have already reappeared on the outside in other Fear Itself tie-ins, such as Man-Bull (in Herc) and the odd team of Ember, Aftershock and Icemaster (in Fear Itself: The Home Front).

Cut back to Iraq and Centurius manages to make the discovery that saves the day, after Troll rescues Boomerang and Shocker saves himself. With the battle won, only then does the team catch word of what's going on back on the Raft, and both teams hightail it back to base.

The issue ends with both teams, together, rounding up the last few straggler prisoners who hadn't managed to escape yet... and with Centurius expressing to the other reserves that he could probably disable their nanites relatively easily in the confusion.

And it's about to get worse, as he must go up against one of the Serpent's elite vanguard alone! Jimmy Woo’s journey to uncover an international conspiracy takes him and the Agents of Atlas to Europe and a descent into universal intrigue where if the voyage doesn’t kill them, what they find there will! More explosive and heart-wrenching tales from across the globe as the entire Marvel Universe quakes from Fear Itself!

*Speedball in "Scapegoat", part 2 of 7 by Gage & Mayhew

-Speedball manages to escape from the angry Stamford mob, surprisingly with the assistance of Miriam Sharpe, the founder of the organization that's rallying against him and blames him for the death of her son. Supervillains escaped from the raft (See Fear Itself #2) are on the rampage through Stamford and Sharpe is reluctant to let Speedball out of her sight to help, considering what happened last time he tried to fight villains in her town, but she eventually agrees that with the damages and injuries being caused by Whirlwind, Living Laser and others, Speedball's involvement couldn't possibly make things worse. Unfortunately, Speedball isn't that much help as he's taken down fairly easily by Living Laser. While the villains make their escape, there is an amusing reference to Icemaster's embarrassing origins as a villain from one of the infamous "Hostess Fruit Pies" ads of the 70's.

The same angry mob from before catches up with the unconscious Speedball and figures out a way they can hurt him. Without hitting him in any way that would trigger his kinetic powers, the mob's leader pulls a plastic bag over his head and proceeds to attempt to suffocate him. Things are looking grim for our hero, until Miriam Sharpe shows up to save the day, wielding a shotgun.

*Jimmy Woo [and the Agents of Atlas] in "The Age of Anxiety" part 2 of 4, by Milligan & Bonetti

-The Atlas team explores the Thule society's castle while Nazi robots rampage through the place. The team splits up; Jimmy going with M-11 and the rest separate. M-11 helps Jimmy to find a secret lab filled with the remains of Atlanteans who were tortured for the Thule Society's mystic rites during World War II, the same rites that led into what's going on right now. Jimmy's first concern is to keep Namora from discovering the desecrated remains of her kin, but has no time to figure out a way to do this as the rest of the team quickly arrives on the scene.

*A Moment With... The Purple Man" by Howard Chaykin

-Megalomaniac mind controlling villain Zebediah Killgrave makes his escape from the blown open Raft prison facility, bemoaning why the Hammer Juggernaut picked up there couldn't have been for him.

*Liz Allan in "Between Stations" by Corinna Bechko and Lelio Bonaccorso

Liz Allan, formerly Liz Osborn, is on the subway taking her son Normie into the city to visit with his father when the mass hysteria of "Fear Itself" intervenes. Two thugs force their way into her train car, prepared to hold people hostage until they can receive medical attention for the injured brother among them. Liz manages to handle the situation herself, bandaging the injured man up thanks to her prior nurse training.

Plot Summary

In the midst of a full blown assault on Washington DC by marauding Nazi robots, Avengers Beast, War Machine and Ant-Man are on the scene.

Beast is shortly called away to meet with army personnel because he has been asked for specifically by the sole member of the House of Representatives who has refused to evacuate the building. The man is representative Leonard Gary, a civil rights champion and old friend of Beast's.

Beast meets with Rep. Gary to try to talk sense into him and get him to flee to safety. Gary refuses; showing Beast that when the evacuation came up, the House was still in session and he had the floor; pushing a bill he'd been working on for 8 years. The session was never officially called, so Gary's health care bill was still officially on the table, so for that, and to inspire hope in any Americans who might still be watching, Gary insisted upon staying.

Gary then shows Beast that Washington DC can take care of itself, as, immediately after Gary says it can, the Lincoln Monument comes to life to fight off the robots; and is quickly joined by dinosaurs from the museum and many other historical statues from around Washington. Beast assumes this is Gary's doing and that Gary is in fact a very powerful mutant, but Gary never confirms it.

In the end, Beast leaves Gary behind to make his speech while he hacks into local news cameras to make sure the speech is given broad media coverage. Late in the speech, the building is badly damaged and Gary is thought to be killed.
