Fear Itself: The Deep #3 - Part 3

3

Defenders Assemble! As Namor and his allies prepare to face off against possessed Atlanteans, there seems to be outside forces at work. Solid book, but needs some focusing.

Namor's group of Defenders seems to face insurmountable odds as Attuma's armies charge. Is this the end for our seafaring heroes?

The Good

I really enjoy the whole Quasi-Defenders reuinion that this book has got going. Sometimes we forget that Doctor Strange, Namor and the Silver Surfer have teamed up in the past, and probably know each other very well. Seeing them in action in this issue was a treat, as I felt that they covered the story of each team member well.

I like the heavy dose of magic that this book deals with, as it gives Doctor Strange something to do, and doesn't root itself too deeply in the Norse mythology. The forces at work here almost seem removed from the Fear Itself shenanigans, which is great, as it depicts what would likely happen in this scenario: outside forces taking advantageof chaos.

The Bad

Quite literally saying "we still have one threat left to face!" when there's one issue to go in the mini just seemed a little iffy. I mean, as a reader, we could assume that, right?

The Verdict

This book suffers from the same problems that every Defenders book has in that the team members are too powerful for the threats they're facing. SSilver Surfer? Hulk-Spawn? Sorcerer Supreme? King of Atlantis? Man, this shouldn't been nothing to them.

Otherwise, this is a solid issue. It's heavy on the action and sets up for the finale of the mini in a satisfying way; hopefully the creators will be able to give it a satisfying ending.
