Fear Itself #2 - a quick look
I haven’t gotten into the extra Fear Itself books yet, only read the first two issues so far. Right now I’m on the fence. The art looks great, but the story and characterizations… meh. I’m behind on Thor, so Odin being back is a surprise for me, along with his pissed off attitude. Not that he was all touchy-feely with his emotions, but he is like Old Testament, old world gods kind of pissed off. And that’s just him having a normal conversation with his son! The Worthy is a pretty cool concept, with only one let down: I know it won’t stick. Maybe with one or two characters, but Hulk and Thing won’t stay in their Worthy alt-persona.
Like I said, the art is great. I love everything that Immonen is doing. The designs, some supplied by Marko Djurdjevic, are awesome. That goes with the issue with the Worthy that I have, most or all of the costumes won’t stick around.
So far, Fear Itself is okay, but I’ve read better story arcs that would make a better event. It’s still early though. FYI, there is hardly any hero face time in this issue. Like someone else put it, this is the gearing up, big evil speech issue with tons of foreboding. That would be my biggest con here: one major scene of bad stuff, lots and lots of "sound" snippits from (assumingly) TV news programs, and hardly any hero presence. Hopefully the heroes put in an appearance in the next issue.
