So, I just read the first issue of Mark Waid's run on The Fantastic Four, issue 489/60. At first the story seemed odd to me. Mark Waid is one of my favorite comic author's so of course I was expecting something really "fantastic," but at first what I felt I had with was a generic story written by an author who didn't seem to understand the characters he was writing, Mr. Fantastic in particular. I even set the book down and walked away from it for a while.
However, by the end of the issue everything fell into place. This issue is rather long (about 33 pages of actual story) and quite text heavy so it can seem a little slow, but in the end it all comes together and becomes a really endearing stand alone character story, mostly centered on Reed Richard. A great point for me was that I didn't even realize the story was about Reed till the very end.
In any case I wanted to read Waid's run because I heard his "Unthinkable" arc was a fantastic story. I'm glad I decided to start at the beginning and I cant wait for the rest. Sorry I doubted you for even a minute Mark :)
