Plot Summary

The Fantastic Four come face to face with Doctor Doom for the first time, the Latverian ruler who would become arguably the group's greatest foe.

Doom attacks the Baxter Building with the intention of bringing in his foes to perform a task for him. He kidnaps the Invisible Girl, and, using her as a hostage, forces Mr. Fantastic, Human Torch, and the Thing to travel back in time via his time machine in order to obtain legendary pirate Blackbeard's treasure.

In the past, the team manages to get some clothes so that they don't stand out so much. To disguise the Thing, Reed covers his eye with an eye patch and gives him a fake black beard. The three then go to a tavern, where they are tricked into drinking a drugged drink. When they awake, they find that they are prisoners on a pirate ship. They escape from the hold, then assist the pirates in raiding another ship which is full of gems. Once the other pirate ship is defeated, the pirates all want the Thing to be their captain, who due to his fake black beard they name Blackbeard.  He announces to Reed and Johnny that he wants to stay in the past, since he's the captain of a ship here, but in the present he's merely a freak.  Reed and Johnny try to convince him to not do it as he'll regret it, but a tornado appears before the Thing can make a final decision. The tornado smashes the ship to bits, but fortunately Johnny, Ben and Reed arrive at shore, with Ben's disguise blown off. The treasure chest has also arrived at the shore, and Reed fills it with old chains, as they never agreed to bring Doom the actual treasure. He brings them to the present where they find out that Doom was merely a robot all along, and that the real Doom was watching them from a secret room. Doom escapes his castle before the Fantastic Four can stop him, leaving them wondering what will happen next.
