Silver Age with a twist
Man, three issues in and I feel myself getting giddy. After the last run of FF with Fraction, Robinson has been bringing a fresh take on things, so far and let's hope it holds.
The Human Torch. Johnny Storm is one of my favorite characters and something that I wasn't happy with in the last run of FF was that Fraction did so little with the character...er at least the present version of him. Robinson however seems to have a great hold on his personality, as well as all the FF for that matter, and is trying to do a little more with Johnny than the "hothead gets mad and flames on while cracking jokes." In this issue we continue to learn what is happening to poor Torchy, and though he seems to take it in stride, I feel the writing leads me to think he's not as well off as he let's on. We see a bit more of Thing`s relationship as well as Sue having some fun with the kids and Val taking a break from things. It's a good read and feels very Silver Age while keeping to current trends. The story is definitely building and has a couple slap you in the face moments that really threw me a curveball.
Visually the book is very average. It isn't bad work but it isn't great either. I do like how Kirk draws the Thing, very big and thick as he should be and I like that he does take some liberties such as Sue having larger hips than we normally see. It works for some reason and gives her more of a motherly look. I like that.
Overall I really enjoyed the book. The story, as I said, progresses well and there are some really cool developments. I worry about the series possibly becoming very dark but with it`s Silver Age meets today feel, I think we're in good hands.
