    Monsters and Commies! 1

I have to admit actually being surprised when I recently reread this issue!  The overwhelming prevalence of the Cold War dripped off the pages!  The intro into the story (in media res) gave the first chapter a diabolical feel!  There was no overt indication that the FF were even heroes!  When the actual origin story begins an interesting dynamic is already displayed between Reed and Ben - Ben actually refuses to fly until Sue chides him for being a coward!  The two college buddies are not too fr...

    Fantastic Four #1 1

Besides the Fantastic Four, many more world famous characters would be created by the team of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, among others, during the early 1960s, generating a new audience for a new era of comics. Nearly all of these characters have endured and are now entering the peak of their popularity in the 21st century with a series of high-budget, popular Hollywood movies.   These early Marvel issues, though, are a far cry from those movies (many of which aren't that good, either)...

The Comic That Launched An Empire 3

Two months after DC kicked off the Silver Age with the now famous 'Flash of Two Worlds' story, Marvel struck back with this titanic comic with one of the most memorable covers in comics history!  Written by Stan Lee, drawn by Jack Kirby and inked by an artist whose identity remains a mystery to this day, The Fantastic Four were a super team like no other. The team was super powered, but also profoundly human, fighting alongside each other, but also squabbling amongst themselves. Stan Lee makes t...

    The Fantastic Four! 0

Discounting the fact that this is virtually where the Marvel Universe would sprout its legs, this initial outing for the Fantastic Four is riddled with typically bad Silver-Age writing that makes the read a bit of a chore. To be fair, a lot of ground is covered, but the whole ordeal seems mechanical and forced—something that this series would suffer from periodically throughout its initial year. Fair enough, I guess, but definitely not the Fantastic start that it could (and should) have been....

One of the most important issues in the history of comics. 1

This is one of the most significant comics to ever be published. It was the first superhero book published after Timely Comics became Marvel Comics. It’s heralded as the start of the Silver Age, and the re-birth of Superhero comics. The month that it came out, Marvel’s lineup included 3 types of books - anthology books that featured random, unconnected short stories (think Twiligh Zone or Outer Limits stuff) such as Amazing Adventures, Journey Into Mystery and Tales of Suspense, teen romance boo...

The comic the Marvel Universe was built on! 0

What can you say about FF issue 1? It's the comic the Marvel Universe was built on!But...is it any good?Well it's not a masterpiece despite how influential it is. Kirby's art is good but he'd done better and would do much, much better in the years to come. Lee hasn't yet found the individual voices for the characters and the plotting basically consists of taking the FF and putting them in a standard Timely monster story. Also Lee hadn't yet hit upon the idea of setting his superhero stories in r...

    Great first issue 0

Anybody who has trouble believing or getting through the fantastical plot then these type of comics aren’t for you. Great characters drawn by the greatest artist with the best sales man in comics history the iconic Stan Lee. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby is hands down the best duo out there to ever make comics. Also one needs to know these comics were made to appeal to kids. One other thing Kirby’s art from the villainous Moleman is simply phenomenal. Get the trades of the Kirby/Lee er...
