When Walt Disney first released Fantasia (1940), he envisioned that Fantasia would be rereleased every few years with some new segments and some old favorites. This never came to pass after the first film was a box office failure. Roy E. Disney back Fantasia 2000 (1999) as an effort to see his uncle's dream come to fruition. The movie consists of many animated "shorts" set to classical music. Different celebrities including Steve Martin, Bette Midler, James Earl Jones, and Angela Lansbury introduce each segment.

The segments, in order of the program are:

A character from Rhapsody in Blue
The Spring Spirit from the Firebird Suite
  • An abstract short featuring butterfly-like 'characters' set to Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5" in C minor
  • A family of humpback whales and their adventures set to Ottorino Respighi's "Pines of Rome"
  • The story of several New Yorkers during the depression drawn in the style of Al Hirschfeld set to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue
  • "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" set to Dmitri Shostakovich's "Piano Concerto No. 2" in F Major-I
  • A flamingo disrupts his flock by playing with a yo-yo set to Camille Saint-Saëns's "The Carnival of the Animals", the Finale
  • Mickey Mouse as The Sorcerer's Apprentice as seen in Fantasia (1940) set to Paul Dukas's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"
  • Donald Duck is an assistant to Noah of Noah's Ark, but fears he lost Daisy in the process set to Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance
  • A spring spirit and her elk friend are restoring a forest when they awaked a firebird spirit of destruction, but restore the forest once more, inspired in part by the Mount St. Helens's eruption, set to Igor Stravinsky's "The Firebird Suite"
