Fallen Son, The Death of Captain America # 2 - Anger

Overview

The devastating end of Civil War has two decidedly different reactions from the Mighty Avengers and the New Avengers! If you thought heroes were divided during the War, just wait until the aftermath! That’s right, it’s both teams in one book, and the superstar team from Superman/Batman – Jeph Loeb & Ed McGuinness – are on board to take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes…and the Avengers Assemble like never before!

The Mighty Avengers are on their way to deal with Tiger Shark. He's apparently stolen the Horn Of Gabriel which has the power to call sea monsters from the oceans. They haven't been able to contact Namor. Iron Man is unable to join them as he is dealing with something else. There is also some concern because there is a secret nuclear missle facilit nearby.

At the same time, Ben Grimm approaches the former site of Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctoreum, now apparently the future site of a Starbucks. Ben cannot read his handwriting on a note that has a secret word to get him inside. Yelling to get in, he suddenly finds himself inside.

*Mighty Avengers*

Iron Man contacts the Avengers. He tells them that Wolverine just popped up on their sensors on the helicarrier. He figures Dr. Strange must be involved, which annoys him. Ares says he'll happily cleave both of them. Black Widow, looking out the widow of their jet, says "Uh oh." Ms. Marvel yells, "Avengers Assemble" as they see a giant sea squid reaching for them and Tiger Shark blowing his horn. The ship is destroyed. Ms. Marvel goes after Tiger Shark as the others deal with the sea monsters. Sentry is not with them because he had a therapy session. Black Widow shoots at one creature with little effect. Ares chops the tentacle of another.

Tiger Shark says that when he beats the Avengers, he will finally get the respect he deserves. Ms. Marvel is outraged that this is all about getting "street cred." Wonder Man gets swallowed by a whale-looking creature with arms. Black Widow keeps shooting at it while Wasp tries to get closer to go after Simon.

Wasp blasts the creature in the eye and Wonder Man is able to pry open its mouth and come out (covered in saliva). The creature is about to steop on Black Widow (who has run out of ammunition) when it is carried away. Sentry arrives. His session was a "45-minute hour."

Ms. Marvel starts giving Tiger Shark a heckuva beating. She yells that he doesn't care if innocent people are hurt or killed. A loud skreeeee is heard as Namor has arrived and has the horn. The creatures have left. He asks Carol what she thinks she will accomplish by beating Tiger Shark to death. He asks if beating him will ease her pain over the death of Captain America. Taking their anger out on him and the sea creatures will not make them feel better. He says Tiger Shark will pay for stealing the Horn and the missles better not be pointed at Atlantis or they will face his anger. Ares asks if they won. Not looking too happy, Carol says yes, they did.

*New Avengers*

Ben and Luke give each others some jabs. Ben notices Spider-Man on the wall seemingly crying over something. Ben says they all miss him. What they're going to do will help get his mind off of it. He asks if he's going to keep his mask on while they play and he sniffles yes.

Ben yells, "It's Clobberin' Time!" as they start up a game of poker. Ben, Luke, Iron Fist, Spider-Woman, and Spider-Man sit around a table. Danny tells Ben he'll cover everyone at the table. Ben says to Jessica that he likes to see the eyes of the folks he plays cards with. She asks if he doesn't trust her. He asks where she stands with Hydra nowadays. She stands up and says she's going to "knock that stupid face off [his] face." Spider-Man tells her Ben is just trying to psyche her out. Danny says if they're wearing their masks, he's going to wear his too.

As the game goes on, Spider-Man asks if they're going to talk about Steve. Everyone ignores his question and he folds. Patriot and Hawkeye (of the Young Avengers) are about to go out on patrol. Luke gives Patriot a hard time and tells him not to give him attitude. Patriot says not to give them attitude. Danny tries to calm Luke down as he says after he gets him, he won't be able to sit down for a month. Danny says it's been a hard week, actually a hard year for all of them.

Wolverine shows up. Ben tells him to take a seat. Spidey asks, "Well?" As Logan goes for a chair, Spider-Man says it's for Steve. Wolverine says he won't be needing it. He tells them that he say the body. Spider-Man tells him he's wrong. It must have been a clone or an L.M.D. or something. Logan just says he's dead.

Spider-Man grabs Logan and shoves him against the wall yelling at him to shut up. Wolverine pops his claws and tells him to let go of him. Spider-Man hits him and Wolverine says he's seen one dead body tonight, "you wanna go for two?"

Ben steps in telling them to knock it off. He says that goes for all of them. They're all on edge quick to attack each other. He says getting angry isn't going to change the fact they lost "one of the greats." Spider-Man says he has to go home. Wolverine says he's going to follow him to make sure he gets there in one piece. Ben, Luke, Jessica, and Danny, looking down, continue to play cards.
