Eyeful Ethel

Origin

Ethel Lynn Niwtyn of Earth, in the 30th century. Ethel's unusual vision is the product of black market bio-engineering performed on her parents before she was conceived. Though they received bargain prices on liver replications. The treatments turned out to have a fatal flaw and their baby daughter was born with eyes on all sides of her head. Despite her unusual appearance, Ethel managed to lead a fairly normal life. She excelled in school; since her eyes work independently, she was able to do more studying than a normal human in the same amount of time and went on to get an advanced degree in education. She tried out for the Legion of Super-Heroes as Eyeful Ethel, yet they rejected her because her ability did not have much usefulness in battle, even in scouting.

Character Evolution

Silver Age

Years later, Ethel gained weight and her looks went down the tube. She began dating Tusker, another Legion reject, and the two attempted to start careers as criminals, but no real criminals took them serious enough. To make matters worse, they tried to start a crime spree on the planet Bismoll, where they then attempted join allegiances with the recently reborn Pulsar Stargrave. She is later defeated by the Legion of Substitute Heroes and she returned to her old job at Metropolis's schools. Where she is Known as "the teacher with eyes in the back of head."

Retroboot / New Earth

Some time after this, Ethel lost the weight she gained and dyed her hair blonde. She and Tusker joined other Earth-born Legion rejects, the Justice League of Earth, and began spreading misinformation that Superman was a human being who was against aliens. Their crusade branded the Legion as the spearhead for a massive alien invasion and sent them underground. Ethel's role in this scheme was as a teacher at the "Human Cultural Center". She taught classes to children about the human life Superman led, his human friends the Flash and Batman, and "the world's first alien invader, the evil Martian Manhunter." Ethel reveled in her role as a manipulator who could get children to believe anything she wanted just because she was a teacher, but the League's efforts were finally brought to an end by Superman and the Legion. Ethel is taking down by Rainbow Girl of the Substitute Heroes. Ethel is still locked up in New Takron Galtos.
