Team » Externals appears in 82 issues.
Absalom is one of the less-established members of the Externals but it is known that his first death was when he was hanged in the Old West for murdering Caleb Hammer. Absalom then joined the other male Externals to become one of the High Lords, their mission was to manipulate the world behind-the-scenes simply as a power game. Absalom, as well as several other High Lords were all betrayed by Selene who used her vampiric abilities to drain them of their life force. Of the Externals he represented the concept of despair.
Apocalypse is never explicitly stated as being a member of the Externals, but he is older than the majority of them and they are a part of his history. Selene denies him being an External, claiming that he himself is not immortal and it is the Celestial technology that keeps him alive even though he had lived for many years before he discovered the Celestial ship. Of the Externals he represented destruction and of them all he is one of the only three that still live, at the present moment. His current wherabouts are unknown.
Burke is one of the less-established Externals, his origins are unknown but it must be assumed his has lived for some time. Burke was one of the male Externals who became the High Lords, along with Saul, Absalom, Gideon and Nicodemus using their power to play power games with the world by manipulating it from behind-the-scenes. Burke died before he could be betrayed by Selene when he fell victim to the Legacy Virus and died, with fellow External Nicodemus. Of the Externals he represented the idea of fortitude.
Candra is one of the less-established Externals, as her story only picks up in the modern day, but it is known she is immortal. She never really worked with the other Externals and instead kept to herself for many years, often interconnected with the Thieves and Assassins Guilds. So it was that Candra met her end far differently than the other Externals, as she had placed all her power in a gem that was stolen, then destroyed by Cyclops, killing her. Of the Externals she represented the aspect of guile.
Cannonball is better known as a member of various X-teams and the eldest child of the Guthrie family. But is was revealed that he was the External of the 20th century, despite Gideon's belief that it was Sunspot. Cannonball never officially joined the team or was really affiliated with them because it was not long after this discovery of Samuel Guthrie that the Externals met their ends. Of the Externals he represented the idea of hope. He may not be an External at all, since Selene denied that he was one, but killed all other Externals.
Crule is one of the less-established members of the Externals, and remembers Rome of the 1st century AD. He is a barbaric ancient berserker who is considered the cruelest and angriest of the Externals. He was employed by the other immortal males, the High Lords, to be their assassin and enforcerer, enjoying these duties. Crule was later murdered by one even more heartless than he, Selene, who drained him and the other Externals of their life force. Of the Externals he was the personification of ferocity.
Though not a mutant member, Eve worked for Gideon to fulfill the group's goals. She killed Emmanuel DaCosta so that Gideon could take Sunspot under his wing and train him (thinking that Sunspot was the next High Lord).
Gideon is one of the less-established memebrs of the Externals, but is known that before he discovered his immortality he was a member of the Spanish armada in 1492. He amassed vast amounts of wealth and joined the other High Lords: Saul, Absalom, Nicodemus and Burke, playing power games with his fellow male immortals by manipulating the world from behind-the-scenes. Gideon was killed by his fellow External, Selene, when she drained him of his life force, and so despite the fact that he was one of the most powerful Externals even he could not withstand an energy vampire. Of the Externals he represented the concept of opportunity.
Nicodemus is one of the less-established members of the Externals, he is believed to be one of the eldest Externals but even this is unknown. Along with his fellow male Externals, Saul, Absalom, Gideon and Burke he was one of the High Lords. They manipulated the world behind the scenes simply because of the enjoyment they felt playing their power games. Nicodemus' life was of unknown years (possibly thousands) but was ended when he contracted the Legacy Virus and his powers went out of control, causing him to burst into a ball of fire. Of the Externals he represented the idea of wisdom.
Saul is one of the less-established members of the Externals, he told Apocalypse that he was older than him at their first meeting in 12th century AD, but it is assumed this is because he did not know the age of En Sabah Nur. His true name is Garbha-hsien and along with Absalom, Gideon, Nicodemus and Burke he was one of the High Lords, the male Externals who chose to manipulate the world as a game of holding the most power. Saul finally met the end to his long life when Selene drained him of his life force. Of the Externals he represented the intangible concept of patience.
Selene is perhaps the most memorable member of the Externals as well as the oldest as her days date back to the Hyborian Age. Selene often went on her own way, manipulating others without the aid of the other Externals and took the title of Black Queen, fashioning a Hellfire Club that took on the theme of Hell. Selene considers herself to be the last remaining External, yet Cannonball and Apocalypse still live, she claims that Apocalypse is not truly immortal and only uses Celestial technology and perhaps she sees Cannonball as being too young to be an External. Absolom, Crule, Gideon and Saul were all betrayed by Selene who drains them of their life force. Of the Externals she represented corruption and of them all she is one of the only three that still live, at the present moment. Her current whereabouts are unknown.
An immortal healer and bearer of the sword, Purity. He once led his 100 Champions into Amenth to fight to protect the mutants of Arakko, only to grow addicted to battle and turn on Arakko as well.
