Exiles

Exiles is a comic book team that first appeared in Exiles #1

The Exiles are group of time & space traveling characters that are charged with the duty to jump across multiple parallel realities. In each one they must resolve a certain issue before they can move on to the next reality in order to save the Multiverse.

The Exiles

Short Description

The Exiles were first brought together by a being that called himself the Timebroker, an entity claiming to be composed of the collective consciousnesses of the group. These individuals were: Blink of Earth-295 (Age of Apocalypse), Mimic of Earth-12, Thunderbird of Earth-1100, Morph of Earth-1084, Magnus of Earth-27, and Nocturne of Earth-2182 were told that there was a disturbance in time that was cascading outward threatening the existence of all realities.

They were unhinged from their own separate realities in order to repair damage to various realities in the multiverse. Eventually after repairing sufficient realities to restore their own they would be sent home. If they didn't repair the realities, they would be sent home to skewed home worlds. These six heroes would become the founding members of the team. Blink, who would become their leader, was given a device called the Tallus, which would be used by the Timebroker to communicate with the group. He would usually give them some info on how to repair each reality, though often very cryptic.

Pre-Publication

The Age of Apocalypse storyline had just ended, and an obscure character called Blink had been a key player in the crossover and gained an unexpectedly large fanbase. What to do with this? Marvel then began planning a Blink spinoff title, which went through several incarnations. One of the concepts was a Blink, X-Man and Morph book. (see picture to the right)

However this didn't really click, and around the same time there was a poll regarding X-men Millennial Visions 2000, a book containing nothing but alternate reality concepts. The poll was about which reality would get a mini-series, and the winner was Professor W's X-Men, a reality where Wolverine was crippled and led the X-Men. One of the members was Nightcrawler's daughter Nocturne.

These two concepts were merged and alternate realities were introduced to the mix, X-Man was dropped and given his own title, Morph was changed to an alternate counterpart of himself and Marvel then published a Blink mini that had little to do with anything, but Nocturne and the desert landscape from Exiles #1 was introduced on the last page.

Origin

Unhinged from time

The Exiles comic begins with Blink. She is the point-of-view character and remains so for most of the series, perhaps because of her origin in the Age of Apocalypse reality. She is unaware of most heroes that exists in most realities thus giving her team-mates the chance to fill her, and the reader, in on any details.

Anyway she ends up in the previously mentioned desert landscape where she meets Nocturne for the first time, and shortly thereafter Morph. Blink jumps at him and hugs him, but Morph doesn't even recognize her. But why is this? He looks exactly like Morph. The three begins to wonder what's really going on when John Proudstar - Thunderbird appears. Nocturne confuses him for his brother James, who she is in a relationship with and more confusingly John is dead in her reality. More arguing over who was an X-Man and not while Mimic and Magnus enters the scene just a clueless as the others.

They all spot a little man in the distance who introduces himself as the Timebroker. He explains that they all come from different realities, and tells a little bit about each of them and tells them they are now unhinged in time. There are ripples in time that have affected all their realities plus countless others. By agreeing to fix broken timelines they can also repair their own so that they can go back. Blink is given the Tallus and it's off to the first mission.

First Mission: Find your greatest teacher.

The first reality the Exiles had to repair (Earth-1805) had all superhumans either killed, aborted, or imprisoned. Their goal was to save their greatest teacher, who Mimic, Nocturne and Magnus all mistook to mean Charles Xavier. The Exiles discovers after freeing him from imprisonment that the Charles Xavier of this reality really is evil and means to kill all humans so that Homo Superior can assume their rightful place as the dominant speices.

Xavier psi-blasts them and leaves to free his Brotherhood, Juggernaut, Domino, Chamber, Human Torch and Spider-Woman. Mimic, Morph and T-Bird fight the Brotherhood, while Blink, Magnus and Nocturne is freeing all other superheroes. Mimic is forced to kill Xavier and then they realize that they were actually supposed to free Magneto, who would become this reality's savior. In doing so Magnus had to sacrifice himself so that the others could survive and was immediately replaced with Sunfire, a counterpart of Mariko Yashida.

Second Mission: Kill Jean Grey.

The team lands in a new reality (Earth-8649) on a Shi'ar battleship during the Trial of the Phoenix Force. In this reality Jean herself became the Dark Phoenix, and the Exiles goal this time is to make sure that she dies, otherwise she will destroy the galaxy. This event is very familiar to all except Blink, and they all have problems with this mission. The alternative, to let her kill billions, is not better, so they sse that they have no choice.

The Exiles disguises themselves as members of the Imperial Guard, so that none of them would be recognized by the X-Men, but their Wolverine isn't fooled. He waits so that he could talk to Mimic alone since they are friends in his reality, but Mimic takes the way of the fist in hope of taking him with surprise. This doesn't go as easily as planned, but after a long fight Mimic emerges victorious.

Nocturne possesses Wolverines body and tells his team-mates that he's been ambushed by unknown assailants. Then they ambush the remaining X-Men, and Nocturne has an easy time taking out Nightcrawler, having trained with him all her life. Dark Phoenix emerges and easily kills Cyclops, Colossus and Storm. Wolverine is back in action and Angel picks him up for a flying fastball. Heading straight for Jean she prepares a killing blast, but just as she unleashes her power Blink teleports Wolverine and Angel to her back, a surprisingly successful strategy she often uses, and Wolverine delivers the killing blow. Jean explodes and kills Wolverine and Angel. The Tallus immediately sends the Exiles to the next reality.

Enter: Weapon X

The Exiles are sent to Canada on a new Earth (Earth-901237), and after Mimic done some explaining on how his powers works he becomes really sick from radiation poisoning, and shortly after the Hulk comes crashing in. Blink doesn't recognize him, and after a short explanation by Nocturne it's time for HULK SMASH! The Exiles don't stand much of a chance and after smacking them around a bit Hulk just leaves. The Tallus hasn't made a sound yet, so the team is a bit confused about what they're supposed to do. Then they meet Alpha Flight led by Wolverine. Also there are some unknown persons standing in the woods watching.

The Exiles are invited back to Alpha Flight's headquarters, and Wolverine briefs the two teams on the Hulk, and then Blink gets a message from the Tallus. They are supposed to prevent a lot of superheroes getting killed by the Hulk. Blink and Mimic are starting to fall for each other and share a kiss, meanwhile the shadowy figures from before are revealed to be Deadpool, Kane and Sabretooth - Weapon X.

The Shaman of Alpha Flight is John Proudstar in this reality, so he and T-Bird do some talking and Shaman helps T-Bird to come to terms with what Apocalypse did with him. The Hulk shows up, and they seem to be getting through to him just as Deadpool shoots Hulk in the head. The Hulk gets really mad and Shaman signals the teams while T-Bird fights the Hulk. T-Bird gets pounded into the ground, but suddenly he transforms into War and the table has turned, T-Bird goes into a berserker rage and the Hulk gets knocked unconscious. He is then calmed down by Shaman while the Weapon X team is spying on them from the woods.

Blink and the rest of the Exiles teleport in and Sabretooth immediately recognizes her, calling her 'My Clarice', and also that she's wearing a Tallus. Obviously he knows stuff. The Exiles gets some downtime, and Mimic hangs out with Nortstar so he can mimic his powers. T-Bird spends some more time with Shaman while the rest of the team hit the dancefloor. It's then revealed that Sabretooth is in fact from Earth-295, the same reality as Blink, and he wears a Tallus of his own. The Weapon X team teleports off to their next mission. The Exiles gets some more time off in, and Nocturne and T-Bird get intimate.

Versus Galactus

When we next meet the Exiles it has been a while and several missions and the team are prisoners on an earth (Earth-5692) conquered by Skrulls. The Skrulls have been rulers of this earth for over a century and keeps earth's super-humans prisoners and forces them to fight in gladiator battles. Mimic, Sunfire, T-Bird and Nocturne are also prisoners here and forced to fight, and they win their battles easily since they have had a lot of training compared to their opponents. Morph and Blink are free and tries to come up with a way to rescue the others when they meet Jim Wilson.

Meanwhile in space a Skrull armada is disintegrated. Galactus is coming...

Terrified the Skrulls pack up and leave the planet, and all imprisoned super-humans are freed. Galactus' herald Terrax arrives on earth, and many heroes gang up on him. He beats them all down until the Banner Beast and Thing enters the fray and pounds him into the ground. Galactus arrives and they all tries to figure out a way to stop him. Hundreds of super-humans attacks him to no avail until T-Bird grabs a skrull anti-matter bomb, transforms into War, punches a hole in Galactus' armor and delivers the bomb. This severely injures Galactus, so he flees. T-Bird ends up brain-dead and in a coma, and a new Exile - Sasquatch arrives at the scene. Nocturne refuses to leave T-Bird behind, but she has no choice as the Tallus teleports them to the next reality.

Post-Galactus

Nocturne sobs over losing her lover as the rest of the team can only look on sadly.  Morph barges into her room, trying to cheer her up and join the rest of the team having fun. She curtly responds no, and Morph lets her know that she's not the only one who misses T-Bird and that the offer to join them is always good. He leaves.  Nocturne looks at the roses in the room and remembers about when she ha a talk with T Bird during when they had to kill Pheonix. She teased him that he didn't seem to like flowers, he compared himself to Ferdinand the Bull, meant for fighting but always wanting something else. Later, in their Alpha Flight mission, TJ and John spoke about Nocturne's homeworld. Morph comes up in the conversation and Nocturne tells T-Bird that Morph thinks T-Bird hates him. John admits he does, but then says he only envies him because he's free.

In a mission to Savage Land Thunderbird suggests they stop their relationship, even though Mimic and Blink are okay with it . He wants to face it and not seek refuge with Nocturne , to which TJ storms off angered.  On a world where Tony Stark was president he tried to make amends with the break up, and always wondered how a beautiful women like TJ would love a "twisted" man like him. She kisses him and tears roll down her cheek and says she wouldn't want anyone else.  Back to the battle with Galactus, she tells him that she's pregnant with his child, but it couldn't have been a worse time since their fighting. He couldn't be happier.  He was going to be a father, and was determined to fight to stay alive to teach his child about Ferdinand the Bull. Back in her hotel room, Nocturne clutches the flowers to her chest and tells the empty room that she can't fight without Thunderbird, and falls back onto the bed sobbing.
