    The flame was stolen from Surtur by Odin, Vili, and Ve Borson at the dawn of time to stop Surtur from bringing about Ragnarok. The Asgardian gods knew that if Surtur were to touch his sword Twilight to the flame, it would grant him unimaginable power, and allow him to bring about the destruction of Asgard in Ragnarok.

    The Eternal Flame was one of the weapons of great power housed in Odin's Vault in the 2011 movie Thor (along with the likes of the Infinity Gauntlet and Eye of Agamotto).
