Manuel de la Rocha, also known as Empath, is a mutant who attended school at the Massachusetts Academy as one of the original students of Emma Frost, the White Queen.
While Empath was a member of the Hellions he fell in love with Amara Aquilla, also known as Magma, who was a part of Xavier's team of New Mutants. Magma, because of her love for Empath, left the New Mutants and joined the Hellions so the two could be together.
Empath later accompanied her to her home in Nova Roma. But on their way, the plane crashed in a swamp. While stranded the couple continued to grow closer together. Empath was later attacked by a jaguar and was saved by Magma. She however was severely wounded. Magma feared the impending marriage that her father was to make against her will, but Empath, knowing this, still was concerned for her health as the wound was becoming infected. So he used his mutant powers to cause Magma to become agitated and make an earth tremor and raise a volcano, so her father would find them by the tremors.
Later Amara was captured by agents of the criminal geneticist High Evolutionary. The agents brought them to a secret base, planning to obliterate Magma's powers. The New Mutants arrived at the base hoping to rescue Magma and Empath. They arrived in time and then went on to defeat the High Evolutionary's agents.
