As much as I love the Green Lantern Corps, I can't help but find the idea of an Emotional Energy Spectrum to be kind of ridiculous, To me a power source that runs off the power of the collective emotions of sentient beings through out the universe is pretty prosperous even for comic books. What do you guys think?

It's essentially the concept of auras but giving those colors/energies/emotions a power.  
 
It's certainly not more preposterous than flying aliens with heat beams, a regular dude who owns everyone and everything, alien symbiotes, radioactive energy giving you superpowers as opposed to death, people regularly coming back from the dead, living gods and goddesses, healing factors, or people that never age.

I think its simple  what emotion/personality trait you represent determines what ring you get.
