It could be...though we've seen Emma in her younger days, and while she had a pretty big nose, she was still very thin. She's admitted to a nose-job. I have a hard time believing that she could gain that much weight...but the dialog is pretty interesting. Rachel could be referring to her 'inner self' being ugly. My guess is that the writers threw that little tidbit in there just to mess with our heads. I know it worked on me.

She's been knocked unconscious before and not changed appearance, so I don't think she's keeping up a psychic illusion. She also doesn't change body type when she turns diamond and no longer has psychic powers. Even if she were at one point hugely fat, she would have had enough money to get work done so it's not like it would still be a problem.

it's true though, after her powers get manifested she gets abandoned by her parents and starts working her way to the top and eventually joins the hellfire club

Um, no. Rachel was merely trying to come up with a metaphorical way to humiliate Emma and represent her fraudulent "good" nature. Emma verifies that Rachel's projection is only what she imagines as Emma's ultimate shame by saying that the scars on her soul are far worse than any Rachel could come up with. In that sense, she means that she is not ashamed of her attention to her physical appearance because she has stains far worse than being shallow on her soul and even with those in full knowledge, Scott loves her anyway.

So no, it's a metaphor. She's not fat, and even if she was hiding it with telepathy, there's no way her diamond form would make her thinner, and the Phoenix would have seen through her illusion because it burns through lies. ::shrug::

If you read her mini, etc. it's very clear she's not actually fat. There are more than a few times when her powers have been shut off where people would have seen this also.
