Elektra is Daredevil's most fearsome enemy as well as his former lover. But she is most renowned as being the greatest assassin in the World.

Origin

Elektra
Elektra

Elektra Natchios was born the daughter of Hugo and Christina Natchios. Conflicting stories of her family exist, however it is known that her mother died shortly after giving birth to her (generally portrayed as happening in either Greece or Cyprus). Her father, Hugo, was a successful diplomat. While working in New York as Greek Ambassador to the United States, he and a 20 year old Elektra were held hostage by terrorists. During the ensuing fight, one of the terrorists fell out of the window of the building they were in causing the police below to open fire, accidentally killing Hugo. At that time, Elektra was a student at Columbia University, but she quit in her distress and went to China to train in martial arts. At first, Stick, who belonged to the Chaste organization, attempted to become her teacher, but she ended up siding with the Hand who made her their assassin. She broke free of the Hand's control to become her own woman, the assassin, Elektra.

Creation

Elektra was created by writer Frank Miller in the 1980's. She made her first ever appearance in the comic book world in Daredevil # 168. She has starred in her own solo comic, Elektra and has starred in several ongoing mini series.

Character Evolution

Elektra's origin has been the subject of contradictory tales. Frank Miller's series Elektra: Assassin (1986) looked at Elektra’s relationship with her father. It starts with an adult Elektra having memories of her father raping her when she was 5 years old. She would be counseled about this and would later believe that this memory was fake. When Elektra was young she had dark visions and heard voices, and her father sent her to psychotherapy because of these.

As told in Elektra: Root of Evil (1995) her mother, Christina, grew apart from her father Hugo and started to have affairs. She let her affairs be known publicly which humiliated him. Hugo ranted to his son, Orestez, telling him that his mother was shaming the family. Orestez took it upon himself to hire an assassin, who attacked Hugo and Christina while they were on an island in the Aegean Sea. Christina died from her wounds while giving birth to Elektra. At first Hugo did not want to raise a baby that was not his, but paternity test results proved that he is the father. Orestez realized his father had not wanted him to kill his mother so he ran away. Elektra and her father grew close together and he would shower her with gifts. One day kidnappers came and assaulted Elektra, but her brother returned as an accomplished martial artist and saves her. He introduces himself to his little sister and tells his father that Elektra needs to learn self-defense. Orestez leaves soon after and Hugo would hire a martial artist to train Elektra.

A rewrite of this story was written by Larry Hama in Elektra #18 (May 1998). In this version, Hugo and Christina met and served during World War II with the Greek Resistance movement. After the war, they got married. Hugo would later go away on government matters and left an 8 month pregnant Christina and a bodyguard (who would later become the groundskeeper, Stavros) to look after her. When she went to the clinic, the hospital was taken hostage by a man wanted by the Greek Army. Christina successfully stopped the terrorist but was wounded in the process. Christina would give premature birth to Elektra and died right afterwards.

Major Story Arcs

Assassin

Elektra would grow up and attend Columbia University in New York City, where she met Matt Murdock, (later Daredevil), for the first time. The two of them began dating. When Elektra was 20 years old, she and her father were kidnapped by terrorists. For the first time, Matt wore a mask and tried to save them. When the police thought the terrorists were throwing their hostages out the window, they opened fire and killed Hugo right in front of Elektra.

Elektra quit school and began studying martial arts. She would eventually encounter a man named Stick who saw all the anger within Elektra. He decided to train her himself to influence her to be good. Elektra would eventually join The Hand where they would train her to become an assassin. She would later quit the Hand and team up with Daredevil after finding out he was Matt Murdock. They defeat the Hand together.

Elektra would become employed by the Kingpin. One of her assignments was to kill Foggy Nelson but she was unable to go through with it once she recognized her as "Matt's Girl". When Elektra battled Bullseye to see who would be the Kingpin’s main assassin, Bullseye stabbed Elektra with her own sai. Elektra gathers enough strength to crawl all the way to Matt’s house and dies in his arms.

The Hand would steal her body in an attempt to resurrect her. Daredevil along with a member of Stick’s group named Stone, interrupted the Hand and defeat them. Daredevil would try to resurrect her himself but was unsuccessful. However, her soul was purified and her body disappears directly afterward.

Elektra would later mysteriously return to help Wolverine when he turned into a beast. She successfully retained him and would eventually help him turn back to normal. After she stopped working with Wolverine, it was revealed that Stone resurrected Elektra and as a consequence to what Daredevil did, split Elektra into a good and evil body. Elektra would defeat her evil self and it went back inside her, returning her to her original self.

Working with Wolverine

When the Hand and Hydra joined forces, they brainwashed Wolverine into their killing machine. Elektra was hired by SHIELD to stop Wolverine, and while trying to stop him she was killed. The Hand took her with them and resurrected her to be another killing machine. She would fight Wolverine (who was back to normal) but mentally speaks to him and tells him this was part of his plan. They defeat the ninjas and when they teleport back, Gorgon goes with them but they are ambushed by SHIELD soldiers. It seemed like Gorgon had killed Elektra by making her neck collapse. Soon Wolverine would reveal that she was alive but missing.

Kingpin Again

When the Kingpin offered to prove Matt Murdock and Daredevil were one, Elektra came back to help Matt. It was later revealed that Elektra helped Kingpin get all the documents on Matt and felt obligated to help him. They met up with Black Widow to retrieve the papers and would be attacked by Bullseye. They win but Daredevil was shot, Elektra would take Matt to the Night Nurse. Elektra disappears and returns with the Hand ninjas. The Hand heals Matt and everyone leaves quickly. Elektra has become corrupt because she was the leader of the Hand. Elektra had kidnapped Ronin of the New Avengers and would try to torture her. The New Avengers bust in to save Ronin. The Hand and them would eventually clash. The actual fight between the two teams resulted in the death of Elektra by the hands of echo. When Elektra was killed it was revealed to be a Skrull named Siri, who has been masquerading as Elektra since the events of Wolverine: Enemy of the State.

Secret Invasion

Skrull Elektra
Skrull Elektra

During the story arc " Secret Invasion the Infiltration" the New Avengers battled Elektra. In the end Elektra was discovered as a Skrull agent, thus beginning the mega event " Secret Invasion". At the end of this event a ship landed in New York. Inside were heroes like Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) and the Invisible Woman (Susan Richards), as well as Elektra herself. When the ship opens Elektra seems surprised and confused, for she was gone for so long. Daredevil is seen on the other end with a smirk on his face.

Dark Reign

Upon the reveal of the missing heroes in the Skrull ship, Elektra exits delirious. A couple of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents come over to help, but, in her state, she breaks one's finger and runs into the woods. Elektra stumbles and falls next to a large tree where the agents soon find her. They continue their attack; one strikes her over the head ending her struggle. Iron man then shows up saying that Elektra is the worlds most deadly assassin, and, if the agents were able to capture her that easily, then she must be in pretty bad shape. Iron Man continues to say that she was the first casualty of secret invasion, but she won't be the last. Three weeks later

S.H.I.E.L.D. is no more. H.A.M.M.E.R. replaces S.H.I.E.L.D. which is run by Norman Osborn who has been holding Elektra in his science labs having scientists running tests on her. Norman wants to know why the Skrulls tested on her and what tests they ran. Elektra continues to say nothing. Then the Paladin sneaks in as a doctor, uses the stun gun on the other doctor and awakens Elektra. He continues to tell her that he was the one who shot Daredevil a couple years ago. Paladin hits her in the mouth, then, when she is bleeding through the mouth, asks if he

loosened a tooth. Paladin then starts saying that there is a bounty on her head for 82 million. He states that it's enough money for him to cross Norman. Elektra then spits a tooth from her mouth

into his neck and frees herself. Elektra grabs a pole and stabs him. Elektra then grabs a knife, walking over to the woman doctor and cuts of her red shirts and uses it as a headband, she walks outside her holding cell where a swarm of H.A.M.M.E.R. agents are rushing toward her. The H.A.M.M.E.R. commander tells one of his men to shoot her in the face,

Elektra dodges it quickly. The commander then shoots her in the arm, Elektra then tells the glove to activate the extinguishers for cover. She then takes out a couple of troops without being detected. She fights the commander who still thinks she is weak and merely shoots him. The rest of the H.A.M.M.E.R. troops corner her so she drops some grenades, and jumps out the ship. Elektra then goes to Matt Murdock's work where she is looking for some help and Foggy Nelson finds her, bleeding all over the place. Elektra collapses in front of Foggy, and Foggy takes her to the Night Nurse. Elektra awakens and is startled. Night Nurse tells her to calm down. Night Nurse lets her know there is a hit on her head. Elektra warns her to get

down. An assassin comes crashing through the window. The assassin threatens to kill Night Nurse. Elektra kicks her back out the window. Night Nurse shows Elektra to her stuff . Elektra grabs it, puts on her outfit and jumps out the window and attacks the assassin. Once Elektra is done with the first assassin she heads for the other. Before Elektra reaches the other assassin, Bullseye shows up and kills the last assassin. Elektra fights Bullseye and stabs him with a poisoned arrow. Elektra then gets weak and falls to the ground. The first assassin then shows and threatens to kill her but a agent then shoots the assassin with the bullet just skimming her shoulder. Wolverine arrives and rescues Elektra. After Wolverine rescues Elektra he then takes her to his home and let's her rest there. After resting and gaining her self back, Elektra then then goes after the assassin who was hired to kill her. Once Elektra get to the assassin's location she then fight's the assassin. Elektra then asks why they want her dead and they say because of what she did on the Hellicarrier but Elektra denies ever having done that and says it was her imposer (the skrull version of Elektra) and since this was all a misunderstanding that she will spare their lives if they leave her alone Norman Osborn then comes on the computer and tells elektra that she had used a ninja mind trick on herself to remove the Hellicarrier event and tells her to unblock it and remember it, Elektra then does so and it ends up that Elektra did bring down the Helicarrier with the help of ninja's. The assassin then gets angry and try's to kill Elektra but before she can kill her, Elektra kill's her and her boss Elektra then leaves the premises ashamed of what she has done.

Code Red

Elektra was next seen as a mercenaries part of the Code Red team put together by the Red Hulk to track down the mutant Domino. She was the only member the Red Hulk found to be worth any value to the team ("the only one of them worth a damn").

Shadowland

Elektra during Shadowland
Elektra during Shadowland

When Daredevil was possessed by The Hand's demon lord The Beast and took hold on Hell's Kitchen, he killed Bullseye in a manner similar to how Elektra was killed by the assassin. This brought Elektra into the conflict by Master Izo who positioned her as a spy and double agent. She arrived just before Daredevil could bring Bullseye back to life. As a spy she fed information to the many street heroes ( Luke Cage, Moon Knight, Spider-Man, Iron Fist, Shang-Chi, Wolverine and Ghost Rider) and helped them enter Daredevil's Shadowland temple. Once inside a fight broke out with the heroes and Daredevil. Daredevil beat all the heroes including Elektra. When Master Izo entered to distract the evil Daredevil along with the beaten Elektra, Shang-Chi took the opportunity to use his Chi powers to heal Daredevil. As daredevil struggled to fight The Beast inside him, Elektra entered his mind to find a young Matt scared and troubled. She urges Daredevil to be the Man without Fear and with a sward presented to him by Elektra, Daredevil stabbed and killed himself to get rid of The Beast. As the rest came too, and examine what has happened, Elektra took this moment to sneak off with the body of Daredevil to resurrected him. Later Matt is seen in a church confessing his sins.

Heroes for Hire

Elektra - Hero for Hire
Elektra - Hero for Hire

Elektra was part of the new Heroes for Hire. As part of her first mission she was hired by Misty Knight to assassinate Bernard Waterman, whose real name was Kurod Ormaon, a bio-chemist who imported the illegal Atlantean drug Hook. Control informed Elektra that this trafficking between humans and Atlanteans was causing thousands of addicts to die. Misty Knight canceled the alarms of the Atlanteans home clearing the way for Elektra and telling Elektra that her fee had been transferred to the assassins offshore account. Elektra then infiltrated the Atlanteans home and stated she wasn't the girl he had hired for the night but someone else did, just before she assassinates him.

With terror in the streets around the world, the underdog operative heroes fight in attempt to keep the cities together, and that meant Misty Knight had to recruit some very unlikely agents. Elektra was hired again by Misty Knight to assist Shroud at The Raft Maximum Security Prison to quell the riots, taking down several prisoners when making her entrance onto the scene. Misty spoke to Shroud, which then revealed that Elektra is being paid double her fee in order not to kill anyone on the mission. Of course it isn't Elektra's style to not kill those who are trying to kill her, but she abides by the rules of the job she has been paid to carry out. Shroud however seemed to disapprove of Elektra's passive statement for just doing special work for Remuneration and that she does not get out of bed for a cause. The two heroes for hire then turn to face off another swarm of escapees from the prison.

At the Raft Infirmary, where Puppet Master is being hospitalized after being shot by Punisher, Elektra along with Shroud there encounter Purple Man and a small personal army of prisoners under Purple Man's pheromones control. Although Elektra found the battle to be quite stimulating, she states to Misty Knight that the prohibition on killing is making the battle against the riot of inmates more difficult than need be. Shroud then used his abilities to shroud them in darkness, in which Elektra being able to fight without her sight easily continues to take down the inmates around them. Elektra and Shroud then go off link contact with Misty due to her audio giving their position away in the dark.

Meanwhile Purple Man had grown tired of being unable to view the fight of Elektra and Shroud against the inmates and releases his pheromones to control the two heroes, ordering Shroud to remove the dark mist and then telling Elektra since she she had been itching to kill all day, she is then told to kill Shroud and escort Purple Man to safety. Elektra pretends to hold Shroud hostage with her sai to his throat, all the while holding her breath to avoid the influenced control by Purple Man's pheromones. Pushing Shroud aside, Elektra attacks Purple Man much to his surprise, swiftly taking him down with her martial arts skills.

While Elektra attempted Shroud to snap out of the control he was under, she states she didn't kill Purple Man due to her job parameters were specific on no killing and discovers that Purple Man had fled.

In Spider Island: Heroes for Hire #1, Elektra is seen fighting along side of other heroes during the Arachnid Infection Crisis in New York, where the villain Jackal has genetically engineered bugs to spread the infection, causing an over run of spider-powered thugs running loose creating chaos in the city.

Powers

Elektra began learning martial arts when she was ten years old, after she was rescued from an attempted kidnapping by her older brother. She was a black belt by the age of twelve. She is an expert with most weapons, particularly her trademark sais. Similar to the Punisher, she is immune to most pain, and can face several trained, seasoned warriors and defeat them within minutes. Elektra can mentally possess someone else for up to an unknown limit of time, and can make others see illusions and hypnotize them. Her speed, agility and reflexes are incredible, letting her fight multiple opponents and dodge bullets. Elektra has peak human strength and flexibility. Elektra's endurance is borderline superhuman, letting her do feats that seem impossible.

Scarlet Assassin
Scarlet Assassin

Elektra, as Wolverine has even stated, may very well be the top ninja in the Marvel Universe. Even without with her silent scream, telepathy and mesmerizing abilities, Elektra has proven herself as being one of the most versatile street-levelers ever. She is an expert mixed martial artist and hand to hand combatant, capable of even choking out Daredevil in a matter of seconds. She's also one-shotted Domino, taken down Bullseye individually, pressure-pointed a man just by shaking his hand, and has ripped a man's heart through his chest before. Despite having renowned enhanced senses, Elektra has even managed to sneak up on Daredevil three times in the past (which shows that she's a master of stealth, primarily learned from the Chaste). She normally uses her signature Sais in fights, but is also an incredible marksman and can utilize various weapons just as well. Stick has took part in training Elektra as well, seeing for the first time just how vengeful she really is.

The course of events in the film begin with Elektra falling for Murdock, then seeing her father murdered by Bullseye. However, she blames Daredevil for his death, seeing only him at the scene of the crime. Elektra was trained by Stick as a child so she practiced intensely with her favorite weapons, sai, which she would use to attack Daredevil. When she finally confronts the vigilante, she impales him by his shoulder. She goes on to unmask him, surprised to see Matt Murdock. Elektra realises it was Bullseye who murdered her father. She confronts Bullseye who beats her in battle, leaving her for dead. She was able to say goodbye to Murdock before dying in his arms.,mirroring how she died in the comics.

Elektra (2005)

Elektra
Elektra

Following the storyline of the Daredevil film, Elektra was murdered by Bullseye. Elektra is revived by her Kimagure master, Stick, who trains her then with his group of ninjas, The Chaste. The Kimagure training is the one which allows controlling past, present, and future, and reviving the death even. However, Elektra is expelled off the group, before finishing her training. And so the story of this movie begins when Elektra is a mythical assassin, slaying DeMarco with one of her Sai daggers, in his own manor.

Elektra is engaged then in a new job to slay a still undisclosed subject. She moves to the area, an insular one, abiding in a big residence. Then, she sympathizes with a 13 year old girl, Abby, by whom Elektra becomes a friend of her father, Mark Miller. However, Elektra's orders arrive and the victims result precisely to be both Miller and his child. Then, the confused Elektra refuses to go on, ready to abandon the area. About boarding the ferry, she perceives some killers around, through her Kimagure intuition. Effectively when she gets to Miller's house, two assassins have gotten there. Elektra stops them, discovering their The Hand affiliation, and then she escapes with Abby and her father.

On the way, Elektra gets to a pool club to meet her master, Stick, who would help against The Hand. She learns that the actual victim isn't Mark but Abby, indeed. The child is coveted by the evil members of The Hand, to become one amongst them, because she is the mythical Treasure, a warrior who could tip the balance of good and evil. The leader of The Hand dispatches his own son, Kirigi, to deal with the intervention of Elektra. Kirigi convenes some powerful henchmen: Tattoo (who endows life, to the animal figures which are designed over his skin), Typhoid (who spreads death over all living creatures on her way), Stone (who is of a super strength), Kinkou (who moves with a great speed).

After an eagle of Tattoo spotted Elektra at the pool club, Kirigi finds Elektra, Abby, and Miller, at the farmhouse of McCabe, the man who manages Elektra's assignments usually. McCabe is slain but Elektra and the group reach a nearby forest through an underground passage. Elektra defeats Stone, crushing him timely with a falling tree. With her father, Abby manages to defeat Kinkou. Then, the little girl surprises Elektra showing martial arts skills, and using her large bracelet for an effective weapon vanquishing two wolves of Tattoo. However, Typhoid succeeds affecting Elektra who gets paralysed by a poisonous kiss of her. Timely, the Kimagure army of Stick arrives and The Hand is routed.

At Stick's camp, Elektra is totally healed and she learns that he would have commanded Elektra to murder Abby. Yet, all was a test which has just been passed. Meanwhile, Abby expresses her sickness being so reclusive amongst the Kimagure, for getting a normal life. Elektra agrees a final duel then with Kirigi. The winner gets Abby.

It would take place at Elektra's childhood house. After dispatching a group of ninjas, Elektra faces Kirigi in a room full of flying white clothes. There, she realizes finally that Kirigi had been the killer of her mother. However, Elektra is overwhelmed by his attacks and she is about being slain, when Abby irrupts surprisingly into the battle, saving her life. Outside the house, in the green maze yard, also Tattoo and Typhoid confront Elektra. Tattoo unleashes a multitude of serpents which surrounds Abby despite her desperate usage of her special bracelet. Elektra stops him though, breaking his neck. Also, Elektra defeats Kirigi, who is stabbed by her Sai dagger, falling down into a well, to turn into dust at the bottom.

Typhoid, the jealous former Treasure of The Hand reaches Abby, though, and she poisons her. Yet, Elektra senses this, throwing one of her Sai daggers through the walls of the maze at her foe, killing her. Quickly, Elektra brings Abby's body into the house and she revives her. This proves that, effectively, Elektra has already become a master of the Kimagure order of Stick. Elektra then says her goodbyes to both Abby and Mark. As she exits the house, Stick appears and talks to her. After their short conversation Elektra then leaves the house proud of what she is done and is a changes person.
