As with my last Set thread, this is going to be very similar. Listing out details about Chthon, lets start with a small copy paste from Set Chronology, as the star for Elder Gods are often the same.
Marvel Handbook 1986: Just a generic origin of Elder Gods
Thor Annual 10: We actually see the origin of Demiurge, then elder gods, then Gaea calling Demiurge on earth, mating with him and birth of Atum, the biggest and baddest of the elder gods, and how he drove away the elder gods from Earth
Marvel Chillers Vol 1, Issue 02:This is the first appearence of Chthon, appearance on panel, based on publication date. Chthon, appearing as The Other, shows up on earth, and has a short fight with Mordred, as he has come here to collect his soul. Mordred defeats Chthon, but even then he tells how Chthon power is infinite and how he will return. From this point onwards, Mordred now is a disciple of Chthon.
Second time we see Chthon is during Nights of Wundagore story arc.
Avengers 186: Mordred, who is now a disciple of Chthon, has Wanda as hostage. Wanda uses her hex power to free her, put up a fight with Mordred but is rather handily defeated
Wanda gets trees to attack Quicksilver who ran away with Django Maximoff
Fire, stone and water rain from the sky, well the water part was rather redudant :p
Avengers 187: Avengers fight Wanda and Mordred and are defeated. The avengers here include: Wonder Man, Captain America, Ms Marvel, Wasp and Falcon, so the only 2 people who are arguably powerhouses would be Wonder Man and Ms Marvel.
Now as every good villain has to, instead of finishing the Avengers and going on his merry plan of devolving the universe into Chaos Wanda sits there talking about Chthon's history.
We see High Evolutionary and Magnus fight Chthon much later, about 10 years, in X men Annual 12
This is once again referenced in Amazing Spiderman Annual 22
Chthon's back story is also referenced in Dr. Strange Sorcerer Supreme 11.
Chthon defeat in the hands of High Evolutionary and Magus as well as his defeat in the hands of Morgan Le Fay is referred to in Marvel Handbook 1986
Marvel Handbook 1992 refers to those loses as well
Marvel handbook 2005 does the same
By the time Wanda has finished telling Chthon's story Beast has found an armor of Knights of Wundagore and uses that to attack Wanda. This surprised Wanda, and Avengers are free
Avengers use Django's doll , to try and pull Set's soul into it. A battle of will occurs, Set's will vs Avengers will, Avengers win because they are awesome. The Doll is thrown into Wundagore mountain, and sealed there, where Chthon lays trapped.
Marvel handbook 1986 vouches the whole incident
This instance is further referenced in Avengers 234
Marvel handbook help us fill various gaps.
Chthon apparently works from an unknown dimension, to which he retreated because of the feat of Atum
He also apparently has absolutely control over his dimension, as stated in Marvel Handbook 1986
He however has some limitation:
1. He cant easily teleport to earth
2. He cant easily (if at all) transfer his entire powers to a mortal host.
Referenced in Marvel Handbook 1986
This is again listed in Marvel Handbook 1992
Marvel handbook 2005 attest that he was the first master of Dark Arts and he created the Darkhold, a book a chaos magic.
Marvel handbook 2005 also has his stats, just putting it here
Chthon, very briefly appears during Vengeance story arc so listing that here as well.
Spiderman Woman 44: Spider woman is faced against Chthon, who starts to evolve her body into a monster. Madam Viper helps Spiderman and they manage to fend off Chthon, which felt kind of weird and underwhelming for Chthon. 2 beings barely street level + class being able to fend off Chthon doesnt do any good to his reputation.
Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme 17: Maria Laveau uses Darkhold to summon a giant monster, which Dr. Strange beat. Interestingly in this issue Maria gets impregnated by Chthon.
Next we hear from Chthon during Birth of Chthon story
Dr Strange Sorcerer Supreme 90 : Some sweet description of Chthon: "Chthon is the underbelly of creation, the shadow that creeps furtively behind the feet of god". No idea who the god is meant to be , perhaps TOAA not sure. This is also the first time we see artistic demonstration of Chthon realm, and it looks pretty cool :)
Doctor Strange thinks Chthon's arrival on Earth would mean the destruction of entire universe
Doctor Strange decides to go confront Chthon in his own realm, pretty stupid i would think given he knows Chthon has complete control of his realm. Strange knew he couldnt beat him, but he knew he had to try, and try he did and failed.
So defeat Dr Strange is send back on earth. Maria is unable to contain Set power and is about to die, her death means Chthon wont be able to come to earth. Dr. Strange offers to help, but being a back stabbing doctor that he is :p, he uses Maria's pure spirit to repeal Set, who either had to flee or would have been destroyed
Dr. Strange and Midwife, together beat Chthon demons, after Chthon ran away
Marvel Handbook 2005 collaborates the whole incident
Next we heard from Chthon during Mystic Arcana story arc
Mystic Arcana 03 , Scarlet Witch : Chthon speaks from young Wanda's body, and uses his power to banish Set control. What we do not know is how far this banishment worked, likely was only the village.
Mystic Arcana 04, Sister Grim: Ian Mcnee and Ashake , who was pretending to be Oshtur, called upon the power of Gaea and Set to banish Chthon
The next we saw Chthon was during Dark Reign story arc.
The Mighty Avengers 21: Mordred awakens Chthon and he takes the body of Quicksilver
The Mighty Avengers 22: While Chthon is explained as a threat to the universe, using Quicksilver he warps reality on a planetary scale, turning the world into Chaos
Avengers beat Mordred
The Mighty Avengers 23: Knowing Wundagore mountain is source of Chthon essence Avengers destroy it weakening Chthon a bit
Hulk attack Chthon amped Quicksilver , proves futile
Ant Man scrambles Quicksilver's brain, Chthon can no longer invoke magic. Chthon jumps to Mordred's body and is then trapped in the book of Darkhold.
