The Tom Taylor Era Begins!
Earth 2 has been the brainchild of James Robinson since the series began in the New 52. The last issue marked his final issue and thus this issue begins the Tom Taylor era. My only experience with his previous work has been on a couple of Boba Fett mini series.
At the end of the last issue, an absolute bombshell was dropped on the world of Earth 2. The villain formerly known as Brutaal revealed himself as a brainwashed Superman and killed Steppenwolf in cold blood. The Wonders of Earth 2 barely escaped with their lives along with the remnants of the World Army.
The Good:
Taylor starts his run with some absolute action and it doesn't disappoint. If I had one complaint with Robinson, it's that his build up didn't always lead to great action scenes. That is not the case here as we see plenty of action throughout. Taylor also does a nice job of giving nearly every character equal face time and there's even the introduction of a new character to the series.
Thankfully, Nicola Scott is still the artist on this title and her work is spectacular as usual. She is one of my absolute favorite artists in the business and doesn't miss a beat here.
The Bad:
There were a few characters who didn't have an appearance that have been essential to the story. Hawkgirl hasn't been seen for a few issues and this issue also lacked an appearance from Alan Scott. He was seen in a short flashback but was a glaring omission for the most part. This series has had a large cast so hopefully Taylor can work more of them in as his run progresses.
The Score:
Despite some missing characters, this series is off to a good start under Taylor. I am also interested in seeing some appearances next issue from a few cameos we had here. Some of them are villains but at this stage the Wonders need all the help they can get against Kal-L.
