I never read the Sandman series from Vertigo when it was first published. I've seen the trades, it's just not something I ever decided to delve into. With that being said, can someone give me a brief rundown? I picked up Sandman Overture and felt completely lost.

    Thanks people.

What exactly confused you (I haven't read Overture yet)?

@dctv3363: It just felt like quite a lot to take in. I don't really know any of the characters, etc.

@jake_fury: Um the Sandman universe isn't really something that can be summed up in a few sentences.

Well Dream of the Endless (also know as Morpheus) is the living embodiment of dreams. Similar logic applies to his siblings (like Death of the Endless). The whole story is a prequel to the main Sandman title in which Dream is taken hostage by mortals in the first issue. It might just be better for you to start with the main Sandman title, since I'm not really sure how much of the story will rely on knowledge of it, or if it's supposed to be self explanatory.

You should be able to read the whole series free from your local library.

My biggest confusion was the huge spread page of characters and their identities.

Get the first issue and read from there. It's horribly simple.
