Devils and Deaths

Drago is a Grendel warrior in the Agrami clan in Europe at some time near the end of Orion Assante's reign. His patrol runs into some orphaned children and tries to help them, but they've been irradiated on purpose by a rival clan. Drago's patrol is now all lethally radioactive as well. They agree to kill themselves rather than get their own clan sick, but send Drago back to warn the Agrami.

Once he returns, he knows he will die soon, but is greatly distressed because he loves his younger brother Goran. Goran looks up to Drago, who is one of the few Grendels to truly understand the honorable Grendel spirit as created by Orion.

When his leader, General Vlado, needs someone to kill a local monster, Drago volunteers, since it will be a good way for him to die. The general also secretly sends Zora, Drago's rival, after him, to kill both the monster and Drago, if he fails.

Drago knows Zora is following him, and leads her down a false trail. He finds the monster, but realizes that it's actually friendly. It likes to imitate people, and only killed them by accident because it is so strong. However, Zora finds them and attacks, badly wounding the monster with her laser sword.

The monster kills Zora. Drago knows it won't survive and wants to put it out of its misery, so he tricks it into killing itself: he picks up his flashlight, and the monster picks up the laser sword. He turns on the flashlight under his chin, and the monster turns on the laser sword, igniting the beam into his own head. Then Drago kills himself out of regret and knowledge that the radiation would soon kill him anyway. Goran mourns his death and tries to live his life according to Drago's ideals.
