Devil Quest
Dr. Creach works in experimental scientific research as a "cyber-mysticist." At first his assistant, and lover, is Joshua Radick. However he is one day contacted by Grendel-Prime, the mysterious cyborg that has been missing for generations. Grendel-Prime is interested in getting back in touch with the true nature of Grendel.
Creach is interested in making a machine that can contact the dead, so they decide to work together. Creach becomes more and more obsessed, and starts to ignore Radick. Eventually Prime and Creach leave Radick and go off to New York, creating a laboratory under the site of Hunter Rose's home. They find a fragment of the "true skull"--Rose's skull--which had last been seen by Josef Mantovani in Four Devils, One Hell, and had been sent to the Khan's vaults.
Using this mystically-attuned site and skull fragment, they create a "meat machine" that can communicate with the dead, and specifically Hunter Rose. They build the machine's energy with the souls of the living. Grendel-Prime finds over 2000 slaves to feed into the machine's energy source. It also somehow requires massive amounts of diamonds to work.
The machine makes contact. Grendel-Prime gets in, and prepares to communicate with Rose. However, the Session Twins, who were hired to find Grendel-Prime by Jupiter III, burst in. They shoot the machine and Grendel-Prime is sent into the past, where Rose's skull is on display, instead of communicating with Rose's soul.
The Sessions interrogate, and presumably kill, Dr. Creach after Grendel-Prime disappears, and come to the conclusion that Grendel-Prime was destroyed.
