Double Edge

Origin

Double Edge was a man obsessed with balance. Though little is known of his past, at some point he developed a fixation on keeping track of good and evil deeds to maintain a sense of balance. Double Edge revealed that this score keeping allowed him to deal with a lifetime of madness.

Creation

Double Edge was created by Gerard Jones, Jeff Johnson, Jeff Parker, Stephen Jones, and Barbara Kaalberg and Ande Parks.

Character Development

Double Edge appeared on a rooftop, seeking to do a deed that would provide balance among the good and bad deeds he had done that night. He jumped from the building, cushioning his fall on a man, intending to steal his car. However, another man came out of a nearby eatery, and Double Edge, seemingly uncontrollably, skewered him with his sword. Stealing the car, he wanted to make amends by performing a good deed, but almost collided with Solitaire, who was racing to stop an arson attack. Both vigilantes leapt from their cars and exchange blows.

Double Edge asked Solitaire to help him perform a good deed, threatening to kill Solitaire if he didn't agree. Solitaire, despite recognizing that the swordsman was insane, agreed to take him along to help combat the fire. They arrived at the historic Plaza del Rey apartments before the fire engines had arrived, to find the top two floors of the central tower blazing fiercely. As the two fearlessly smashed through the blaze, saving several lives, Solitaire considered the possibility of recruiting Double Edge into his vigilante network.

After saving several lives, Double Edge began to worry that he may have done too much and caused the scales to once more require balancing. In the confusion of the smoke and fire, Double Edge attempted to escape, but Solitaire confronted him. Double Edge explained that he needed to maintain balance between good and evil deeds to maintain balance. He further explained that he had achieved balance that night and was no longer a threat.

No sooner had he explained, than a gas main exploded sending a large piece of flaming debris flying towards Solitaire. Double Edge pushed Solitaire out of the way, saving his life, and once more causing the scales to be out of balance.

Solitaire left Double Edge to go and save more lives, but he encountered the swordsman again when he returned to his car and was attacked. The two once more engaged in battle. Solitaire sought to lure Double Edge into the darkness where he would have the upper hand. Solitaire soon realized that Double Edge did not necessarily need to kill him, and if he was unable to would target someone else. Solitaire sacrificed himself and Double Edge sliced him across the stomach. As Solitaire lay bleeding profusely on the ground, Double Edge walked off into the night commenting the “beautiful symmetry,” and stating, “There is a stillness in my heart.”

Skills and Abilities

Double Edge is skilled at close-quarters combat and is a proficient and deadly swordsman. He is athletically inclined, but does not possess any superhuman skills or or abilities with regards to strength, speed, or durability.
