Marvel Gets Writers for Doctor Strange Movie

Posted by No_name_here (1223 posts) - - Show Bio

Doc Strange looks happier here than I've ever seen him. Don't you agree?

Could the Sorcerer Supreme finally be getting his fair shake at the big screen? Now, that Marvel's finally getting its ducks in a row with CAPTAIN AMERICA, IRON MAN, THOR and all the AVENGERS, I suppose it was only a matter of time before they started stirring DOCTOR STRANGE into their colossal cinematic cauldron. Deadline’s just reported that Marvel’s hired screenwriting  duo Thomas Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer to write a script about the famous Stephan Strange. The pair’s actually already had some experience with comic-based movie writing, having scripted the currently-shooting CONAN reboot as well as a draft of COWBOYS & ALIENS.

A DR. STRANGE movie’s been in development hell so long that, well, it should be extending into all those other horrible realms that Nightmare, Dormammu, Mordo  and so on like to inhabit. Names like Bob Gale, David S. Goyer, BLADE director Stephan Norrington and Guillermo del Toro have all been attached to this project, dating as far back as the year of my birth, 1986. Del Toro might sound like the best choice to direct this, actually, and, given that his schedule’s cleared up after he parted ways with THE HOBBIT, he might actually be available to do it. I can see it… Dr. Strange and Hellboy certainly have similar vibes already. == TEASER ==

The funny thing is that a lot of you Comic Vine maniacs might not realize that there’s actually already been a DR. STRANGE movie. It was a made-for-TV special starring Peter Hooten that aired on CBS in ’78. Unfortunately, it didn’t do well enough in ratings to warrant a continuing series, but the consensus seems to be that it was actually pretty well done for its time. I haven’t seen it myself but, now, thanks to “mystic arts” of the internet, all you maniacs can watch the beginning below…

Update:

Bleeding Cool mentioned that Patrick Dempsey apparently really wants to play Doctor Strange.

I've really wanted a Dr. Strange movie. There's a lot of potential and he's so terribly underrated. I still say we get my dad to play him:

I'm sure he'd take any role, he's such a huge Strange fan. =]

Thor aside, this is one of the Marvel movies I'm most looking forward to seeing.

hmm, who would be a good strange... maybe johnny depp? (don't everyone crucify me at once)

#10 Posted by Murphiroth (78 posts) - - Show Bio

I've always thought Hugh Laurie would be a great Doctor Strange.

I can't wait to hear more about this movie.

I've seen a few episodes of 'Being Erica' and I always said the therapist could just be Stephen Strange doing a side-job on the side of all his heroic stuff. lol

Lord that '78 tv movie was bad. I was so looking forward to it as a 12 year old and I still get nightmares.  This is a movie that Del Toro should be sought out for to direct. Someone with his vision could really unlock the mystery and magical elements needed for the Sorcerer Supreme. Wont know if the two writers are any good until I see the new Conan and C&A. They have lots of history to draw from though so it shouldnt be that hard.

Dr. Strange is the greatest thing in comics. I'll basically pay for anything with him in it.

Just take my money Marvel.

@Fire-brand:  Dude I've thought he'd make an amazing Doctor Strange for years. I'd back that horse 100%

Too bad we can't raise Vincent Price from the dead, he'd be perfect. I've been hoping this movie was still being made. I always liked Dr. Strange so this is exciting.

I would definitely love to see either Hugh Laurie or Liam Neeson portray Dr. Strange.  I'm leaning more toward Liam Neeson as he is a fantastic actor who did quite a good job of portraying Ra's Al Ghul.

I think Viggo Mortensen could pull it off. I don't think he's into doing anything not directed by Cronenberg these days though. Of course Vincent Price is the obvious choice, which sadly isn't possible. Benecio Del Toro could be incredible.

Edit: Also,  there's another question. Is this going to be teased after Thor, Cap, or Avengers?

Sweet about time they got the ball rolling on this one & Liam Neeson is good

I don't know, I have really low expectations for this idea, I'll just have to leave it the hands of Marvel to make me a believer through previews and trailers. But if for any reason Nicolas Cage is cast as Strange!......im done

@Tom Pinchuk: so many wonderful pictures of Strange you could have used, that one makes him look like a freaking porn star XD

Meh... i dunno... a Dr.Strange film seems very psychodellic... i think itd have to be a lot less realistically serious like Iron Man and Thor seems to be....

#26 Posted by Freddy.Mercurial (152 posts) - - Show Bio

DANIEL DAY LEWIS.  'nuff said...

#27 Posted by sora_thekey (8154 posts) - - Show Bio

Patrick Dempsey... Well that could work...
I have grown to care for the character so I really would want a Strange movie! Especially if it's anything like the animated movie... which BTW I think was my favorite Marvel animated.

LOL it was the 70s every male actor looked like a porn star back then. Puffy hair and the bad mustache was all the rage, way to go Burt Reynolds!

Patrick Dempsey? Wow...

Hugh Laurie is a genius pick, because House is almost what the first part of the Doc Strange movie should be.  According to the good Doctor's origin, he was a sarcastic, pompous fool who was a revered specialist while remaining a miserable human being.

Patrick Dempsey would be good as Dr. Strange , but I always saw Johnny Depp as Strange.

Holy s&!£, I never knew there was an old cheesy Hammer Horror-esque Doctor Strange!  It's terrible... but I love it!

But I really do hope they make a new & good-quality movie.  I love the character :)

Well it's about damn time the Sorcerer Supreme got his due!

I'd think Ed Norton would have been pretty good - if he could deepen his voice a bit.
I heard he is a fan and based his character in "The Illusionist" on Stephen Strange.
But he's already locked up as The Hulk of course.

Depp would be good as a younger-ish looking Strange, plus he's great at these sorta roles.

Liam Neeson would be awesome - his got the look, height and regal vibe for the role.

I never thought of Viggo Mortensen before - but that's a damn good choice!
He'd kick ass I think.

LIAM NEESON.

For me the only actor that could bring the best out of Dr Strange would be Mr Depp..
