General Bradley authorizes amputation of Joe Ledger's hand to recover the alien crystal, but agrees to an additional review when confronted by Doctor Norton, only to go behind his back and move the surgery up covertly.
In his memories, Joe gets a fake ID to show he is old enough to join the military without parental approval before the crystal locates him again. After joining the military, he relives his pre-bootcamp one-nighter with his former girlfriend. While remembering a stressful confrontation in bootcamp, Ledger remembers a latino child-soldier, and the crystal recognizes it as a weakpoint.
Doctor Norton arrives back at the office unexpectedly just in time to find that Bradley has moved Ledger to surgery. As the operation begins, the crystal unleashes a massive blast of energy, killing everyone in the operating theater, and only Joe's mental control allows him to prevent further damage.
