Dr Octopus’s abilities derive from his four steel tentacles. Attached to a harness encircling his lower chest and waist, each telepathically controlled, telescoping limb can move at speeds of up to 90 feet per second and strike with the force of a jackhammer. Once he was Otto Octavius, a brilliant and respected nuclear physicist, inventor and lecturer. But a freak laboratory accident exposed him to intense radioactivity, grafting the tentacles to his body and transforming him into a criminally insane megalomaniac. Since then, Doc Oc has dedicated his warped genius to building an empire of crime and eradicating his most hated foe: the Amazing Spider-Man. Edit

Origin

Once he was Otto Octavius - a brilliant and respected nuclear physicist, inventor and lecturer. In pursuit of academic excellence, Octavius designed and constructed a set of highly advanced robotic arms to assist him in his research. Now able to manipulate radioactive substances from a safe distance, Octavius was dubbed Dr. Octopus by his co-workers. A freak laboratory accident exposed Octavius to intense radioactivity, grafting the mechanical appendages to his body and granting him complete telepathic control over the artificial limbs. The mishap also altered Octavius' mind, transforming him into a criminally insane megalomaniac.

Abandoning his hopes to one day further the field of atomic research, Octavius turned instead to a life of crime. Possessed of incalculable power, the formerly timid scientist came to see himself as the most dangerous man alive. Dr. Octopus has sought power over others through various illegal endeavors, attempting to amass enough wealth through extortion and outright theft to build a sprawling empire of crime. If need be, Doc Ock is willing to resort to murder to achieve his desired ends. Through the years, he has become obsessed with the destruction of his most frequent nemesis, Spider-Man.

Dr. Octopus has proven to be one of Spider-Man's most formidable foes; their battles have been among the hero's most brutal, testing the limits of Peter Parker's amazing abilities. Although Octavius' original, benevolent nature returns from time to time, his sinister Dr. Octopus personality always re-emerges and become dominant once again.

Film

Played by Alfred Molina in ''Spider-Man II'', Otto Octavius is a much more sympathetic character that his usual portrayals-- until an accident caused during his fusion experiments. The tentacles he'd built to handle his reactor were immune to extreme heat and magnetism, but since they connected directly to his central nervous system, feedback from their advanced AI would overload his brain during use, if it weren't for a special inhibitor chip. Well, what do you know, it turns out activating the reactor blew out that chip-- while all the other parts of the harness remained functional. What are the odds?

Now insane from the overwhelming input, Octavious turns to crime for money to to rebuild his reactor (using mail-order parts, in an abandoned wherehouse.) Tagged Doctor Octopus by the press (because Doctor Strange was already taken, don't ya know) the villain has a climactic showdown with Spidey, but finally overcomes his mental damage just in time to prevent his own device from destroying New York.
