Doctor Octopus is a comic book character that first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #3Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius is a scientific genius but after an experiment explosion, Otto Octavius's body was fused to his four steel tentacles and soon became Spider-Man's strongest foe, Doctor Octopus.
Origin
Once he was Otto Octavius - a brilliant and respected nuclear physicist, inventor and lecturer. In pursuit of academic excellence, Octavius designed and constructed a set of highly advanced robotic arms to assist him in his research. Now able to manipulate radioactive substances from a safe distance, Octavius was dubbed Dr. Octopus by his co-workers. A freak laboratory accident exposed Octavius to intense radioactivity, grafting the mechanical appendages to his body and granting him complete telepathic control over the artificial limbs. The mishap also altered Octavius' mind, transforming him into a criminally insane megalomaniac.
Waking up from the hospital and discovering his new found powers, Octavius held the medical staff that was trying to remove his tentacles from his body hostage. Spider-Man came to the rescue but was easily defeated by Doctor Octopus that after the fight, he was thinking about retiring from his superhero career. But it wasn't until he was inspired by the Human Torch to become a hero again when the Fantastic Four was fighting Doctor Octopus. When Octavius kidnapped Betty Brant, who was dating Peter Parker at the time, Spider-Man goes to save her, but he was suffering from a virus. When Spider-Man was easily defeated again by Doctor Octopus, he managed to unmasked him but he didn't believe that Peter was the real Spider-Man because he was not as weak as he had fought him before. Doctor Octopus left Peter and goes on to a crime spree and later a fully healed Spider-Man and was defeated.
Tired of being defeated by Spider-Man and deducing that he needed help to defeat the wallcrawler so he called on to other villains that fought and was defeated by Spider-Man to create a group to defeat him. Only Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio and Vulture answered the call. While Doctor Doom was to proud to join a team and he was too busy defeating the Fantastic Four and the Green Goblin wanted to defeat Spider-Man on his own. Together with his cadre of supervillains, Doc Ock created the Sinister Six but was again defeated by Spider-Man and soon disbanded. Doc Ock would soon reassemble the Sinister Six again in different incarnations.
During a fight between Doc Ock and Spider-Man, he became indirectly responsible for the death of Gwen Stacy's father, Captain George, who said to Spider-Man that he knew that he was Peter Parker and that he should take care of his daughter from now on. Later, Doctor Octopus was transported to Battleworld by the Beyonder to part in the Secret War. In the events of the Clone Saga, Octavius manage to save Spider-Man's life but in doing so, he discovered his secret identity. He gave himself up to the police hoping that Stunner would save him, but she was knocked out and subsequently murdered by the clone of Spider-Man, Kaine. Carolyn Trainer then inherited his master's tentacles and title, calling herself Doctor Octopus until her predecessor was resurrected by the evil ninja cult, The Hand. Upon his resurrection, he lost his memory, but his apprentice gave him a computer chip that holds his past memories, except the time he discovered Spider-Man's secret identity.
Doc Ock was seen again in Ryker's, where he was brainwashed to defeat the Green Goblin. He later got mix in the skirmish between his target and Spider-Man in the Brooklyn Bridge, where he and the Green Goblin was struck by lightning and fell from the bridge and into the river. Octavius emerged from the river with no knowledge of the event. During the Civil War, he witnessed Spider-Man revealing himself as Peter Parker on the television, where he later goes on a rampage in the streets, complaining about how he was defeated by an adolescent boy. Spider-Man confronted him and defeats him. He is seen later in Baron Zemo's group of supervillains that are hunting down both heroes and villains that are not abiding to the Super-Human Registration Act. He was later approached by a desperate Spider-Man on finding a way to save his Aunt May's life, but like many other that Peter has approached before, he didn't know what to do.Doctor Octopus returned in Amazing Spider-Man #600. He has been told that due to all the blows to his brain, and radiation from the accident which gave him his powers are going to kill him soon. Octopus has upgraded himself, so that he now has eight arms attatched to himself instead of four. Octopus has also built tiny eight-legged robots, which he wants to use to turn the city into a paradise before he dies. Unfortunately, his subconsciousness makes them disrupt the wedding plans of Aunt May and attack Spider-Man. With the help of the Human Torch, Spider-Man manages to find Doctor Octopus's base, and after freeing J. Jonah Jameson Snr., Carlie Cooper and Norah Winters, Doctor Octopus escapes.
Powers and Abilities
Before the accident that turned him into a villain, Otto Octavius is genius in the field of physics, where he earned a Ph. D in nuclear science and because of this innate intelligence, he has become a expert strategist and leader in his criminal career. He has four telescoping titanium-steel tentacles attached to his lower abdomen and waist which was grafted into his body after an explosion from his experiment. superhuman strength derived from his tentacles that can carry for up to 8 tons, as long as one of the tentacles is supporting Octavius' body as an anchor to the ground. the tentacles can also hit with a force of a jackhammer and travel to speeds of 50 mph. Not just a weapon, Octavius also uses his tentacles for locomotion and scaling high buildings. In all of his appearance, Doctor Octopus has had three sets of tentacles; the original titanium tentacles, a more powerful adamantium, both of which were destroyed and his current set of tentacles that is made out of titanium-steel-niobium allow mixture that looks more of the octopus tentacles
When his tentacles was surgically removed from his body, he was able to telepathically control his tentacle to execute an escape, thanks to the accident that fused his tentacles to his body, the same explosion rewired his brain to accommodate the control of his extra appendages. Another theory about the the strong bond of Octavius and his tentacles was that they were bonded not just physically but also mentally as evidence when the original set of tentacles were destroyed, Octavius felt so much pain within himself.

Spider-Man 2
Dr. Otto Octavius (played by Alfred Molina) was a physicist employed by Harry Osborn to developed a new alternative source of energy by creating a miniature sun using the rare element Tritium. Peter Parker was doing a term paper about him and was able to meet him thru Harry. Peter and Otto sounded like each other in terms of their mutual interest in science and he invited Peter into a demonstration of his experimental fusion reactor. On the day of the exhibition, Otto introduced four mechanical heat and magnetism-immune tentacles with their own artificial intelligence that will help in stabilizing the miniature sun. When the sun develop to create its own gravitational force, it begins to sucked everything that is metallic. Peter sensed that this will become dangerous and soon changed to Spider-Man. When he arrived, the whole facility was getting destroyed, Otto's wife was killed in the chaos and Otto gets electrecuted, his inhibitor chip that suppresses the tentacle's AI from overwhelming his brain, gets fried. Spider-Man was able to avert danger by disconnecting the main powerline to the reactor, shutting it down. Otto was taken to the hospital, where a medical team is present to seperate the mechanical appendages from his body.
But the tenatacle's AI begins to defend itself by killing the medical team. Otto wakes up and screams in what he saw and soon escape from the hospital. He then headed to a abandoned warehouse in the docks, where contemplated that his experiment was doomed in the start, but the tentacles begin to influence his mind and soon his judgement. They advised him to rebuild the experiment in a much larger scale to contain the miniature sun. Otto argued that without money, they can never start, but the tentacles persuaded him to steal the money. Otto was completely submitted to tentacle's superior mind and they carried out the plan to steal from a bank to finance his failed experiment. The bank was coincidently the same one Peter and his Aunt May was in.
When Otto started to collect the money, Peter change to Spider-Man and faced Otto which spilled to the streets. When the police arrived, Otto took a hostage, Aunt May, and attempted to escape. Spider-Man was trailing and with short skirmish, Aunt May was rescued by Spider-Man but Otto escaped and begins to construct the fusion reactor.
Now named Doctor Octopus by the Daily Bugle's editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, Doc Ock goes to Harry Osborn to collect the Tritium needed for his experiment. Harry made the deal with him where if Doc Ock could bring Spider-Man, he will give him the Tritium. Doc Ock asked how he could make contact with Spider-Man since he hasn't been seen for a time (Peter decide to retire from being Spider-Man, since everyone he loved was getting hurt). Harry said the Peter always takes Spider-Man's pictures for the Daily Bugle. Doc Ock sets out to look for Peter, who was in having lunch with Mary Jane, and told him to tell Spider-Man to meet him in a clocktower or els he will kill Mary Jane. Doc Ock then takes his leave, with Mary Jane as his hostage.
Peter comes out of retirement, retrieve his costume from the Daily Bugle and faced off with Doc Ock, which ended up on top of a train. Doc Ock headed to the front car of the train and broke the train's throttle, speeding it towards the end of the line. When Spider-Man was able to stopped the train in time, Doc Ock goes to retrieve Spider-Man, but he was valiantly defended by those who he saved. Doc Ock goes through them and Spider-Man willingly gives himself up to the villain. Doc Ock binded Spider-Man and gives him to Harry, and in turn he give Doc Ock his Tritium. Back at his warehouse, Doc Ock begins his experiment, with Mary Jane still his hostage.
When Spider-Man arrived to save Mary Jane, Doc Ock sensed his arrival and fought him for the last time. When Doc Ock was able to kill Spider-Man, he was again electrecuted and got blasted in a corner. The electricution was so great that it disable Doc Ock's tentacles. Spider-Man then unmasked himself and asked Doc Ock to help him stopped the fusion reaction, but he wouldn't let him and started to stranggle him. Spider-Man told Doc Ock what his Aunt May told him about sacrifice one's dream. Realizing what Peter is trying to say, he summons the willpower to command his own tentacles to destroy the fusion reactor by drowning it into the river. He succeeds, but at the cost of his own life, he drown and was lost in the river's depths.
