Otto Octavius originally designed the arms to work with dangerous materials from a safe distance, but after his accident,Otto has used their violent potential for means of destruction.

Dr. Octopus has control over these arms using a direct link from his brain and a computer built into the harness. This allows him to control the arms as if they were his own. The arms are telescopic, versatile, flexible and can do very fine detailed work, or fight with awesome strength. Using the arms for walking also make Dr. Octopus able to travel at speeds up to 50 mph. Doc Ock's arms were the first thing to break Spider-Man's webbing in the comics, an example of their incredible strength.

In the Ultimate Universe, Doc Ock has modified his arms with nanites so that they can change into flamethrowers or machine guns.

In Spider-Man 'The Final Curtain', Doctor Octopus upgrades his arms with Biotechnix material, later finding out that it's best just to have his normal arms.
