Shadow of Death
It has been a long time since I've caught up on some old issues of Dr. Fate. I had a little trouble getting into this issue. Once I understood what was going on, I enjoyed it more. Not my favorite, but an okay read. The neighborhood that the Nelson's live in is a strange one. Lot's of different people hanging out there and not necessarily getting along with one another. Debby Niles is the new cop on patrol there and is stopping in to take her Aunt and Uncle out to lunch.
The story takes a little while to set the ground work here. We get introduced to Debby and find out what her relationship to everybody is. We also need to find out some background on the old lady in the neighborhood that is being tormented by some punks. She ends up shooting Debby and that's when Dr. Fate needs to get involved. Or so Inza thinks that Dr. Fate needs to stop this tragedy.
I liked how this played out. Really made me think about our souls and how some people feel they come back after "seeing the light". In this case, Dr. Fate is forcing the issue, not like it happened "naturally". Is this an abomination? Is this something Dr. Fate should be messing around with? These are things I pondered while reading this. I enjoyed it more in the second half.
I'm going to have to track down the next issue to find out the answers to my questions.
If you can find a copy cheap, it's worth picking up, but don't pay a premium for this story.
