Fantastic Four #5 - Prisoners of Doctor Doom! - The essential first appearance of Doctor Doom!

The Fantastic Four come face to face with Doctor Doom for the first time, the evil genius who would become the group's greatest foe.

Doom attacks the Baxter Building with the intention of recruiting the Fantastic Four to perform a task for him. Taking the Invisible Girl hostage to use as a bargaining chip, Doom forces Mr. Fantastic, Human Torch, and the Thing to travel back in time via his time machine to steal Blackbeard's treasure for him.

In the past, the Four find period garb. To disguise the Thing, Reed covers his eye with an eye patch and gives him a fake black beard. The three then go to a tavern, where they are drugged and Shanghaied. They awake aboard a pirate ship. Escaping from the hold, they assist the pirates in a raid upon another ship; one which is loaded full of gems. Upon their success, the pirates choose the Thing to be their captain, and due to his fake black beard they name 'Blackbeard'.

The Thing tells Reed and Johnny that he wants to stay in the past, since he's the captain of a ship here, but in the present he's merely a freak. Reed and Johnny try to convince him otherwise, but a tornado looms before the Thing can make a final decision. The tornado smashes the ship to bits. Johnny, Ben and Reed make it to shore and recover the treasure chest which Reed fills with old chains, claiming they never agreed to bring Doom the actual treasure, just the chest. Then they return to the future for a final confrontation with Doctor Doom!

Fantastic Four #57 - Enter Doctor Doom - Dr. Doom steals the Silver Surfer's Powers! (Part of the Doomsday story arc)

This issue opens on Reed, Sue, and Ben entering a State Prison's visiting room, where they are surprised to find the guards unconscious. The Sandman attempts to attack them from behind, and is successful at holding the group at bay shortly before escaping through an air duct. It's then revealed that it's a plan of the Wizard's to get Sandman outside, as he can then break him out of prison in the future.

At the same time, over in Latveria the Silver Surfer gets a message inviting him to come to Doctor Doom's castle. Not knowing of the menace of Doom, the Surfer accepts the invitation, and is given a tour of the castle, oblivious to Doom's intentions. Whilst this is happening, the Sandman attacks the Fantastic Four (minus Johnny) at the Baxter Building, thinking that they'll have the equipment he needs to break the Wizard out of jail. After a fight, the Sandman manages to escape with some of Reed's inventions, since even though he doesn't know what they do, he assumes that the Wizard will know how they work.

Meanwhile in Latveria, the Surfer begins to grow suspicious of Doctor Doom after seeing how he treats some of his servants, but sticks to the tour. When in his laboratory, Doom unleashes his plan: he distracts the Silver Surfer with a video of the universe, which the Surfer is sorely missing. He then has several devices attached to himself, and connects them to the Silver Surfer, draining the Surfer of his Power Cosmic.

Meanwhile, Johnny and Wyatt Wingfoot are still trying to convince Lockjaw to teleport them inside of Attilan, which is sealed by a barrier, but instead he teleports them to a strange dimension in which a large number of dinosaur-like beasts reside. They get into a stampede, but Lockjaw manages to teleport Johnny and Wyatt away before they are crushed.

In Attilan, Black Bolt is still severely weak after deactivating a bomb using his voice. The other Inhumans ponder how he was able to make a sound, which he hasn't been able to, before Maximus appears, still mad. He tells everyone that Black Bolt has always been able to speak, and that if they want to know more, they should question Medusa.

Back in Latveria, Doctor Doom tests out his new powers, flying around on the Silver Surfer's surfboard, whilst the innocent civilians wonder who could stop him. And in New York, Sue tells Reed that she has a terrible feeling that someone more dangerous than the Sandman is coming.

Fantastic Four #196 - Who In The World is The Invincible Man? - A 5 part story that concludes with a memorable battle between Reed & Doom (Fantastic Four #200 - When Titans Clash!)

#196 - A newly reunited Sue, Ben and Johnny have all been attacked and abducted by the Invincible Man using the Psycho-Man's hypnotic powers. When they are imprisoned, it is revealed that the Invincible Man is none other than Reed, who has been equally hypnotized.

The four members attempt to break out of the holding cell, but they are shot with sleep gas as the Mastermind behind the entire elaborate scheme reveals himself... DOCTOR DOOM!

#197 - Doctor Doom has plans for Reed Richards and his Stretching Powers, so he sends Mr. Fantastic back up into the cosmic radiation storm so he can reclaim his lost abilities.

Unfortunately for Reed, although the re-exposure to the beams is successful, the villain Red Ghost has also been rejuvenated, and Reed must defeat the villain before returning to earth!

#198 - Reed teams up with the underground Latverian resistance to storm Doom's complex and save the remaining members of the FF!

#199 - Doom has given his son the powers of the Fantastic Four, which have an adverse effect on the clone, turning him into a freaking amalgam of all four Fantastic Four members. Unlike his father before him, though, the disfigurement doesn't drive him insane, in fact, it is quite the opposite, and in a moment of clarity, the clone of Doom realizes that is it his FATHER who is the evil one that must be stopped!

Thus it is that Victor Von Doom is forced to slay his own son, destroying all his carefully laid plans for the future of Lateveria.

#200 - Here it is... the ultimate showdown between Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom, the all-out battle that has been brewing and hinted at from as far back as issue #5!

With his clone successor dead and the rebels beating down the castle doors, Doom has but one ace in the hole left-the Hypno-beam which will enslave the delegates at the United Nations, giving Doom total control of the world. But he must deal with the Fantastic Four, and he will soon find out that no matter what the circumstances or situation, Reed and the team will never give up

Marvel Graphic Novel #27 - Emperor Doom - Doctor Doom takes over the world through mind control.

Surprisingly enough, the world is a lot better with Doom in charge. While he is wondering whether it was all really worth it (is it really a conquest if you just take over everyone’s mind?), Wonder Man of the Avengers tries to put together a team of heroes to stop Doom (while questioning whether it is his right to ruin a world that is at peace. Is peace worth the loss of free will?)

Secret Wars - This 12 issue story begins when a team of heroes finds themselves transported to a space station in an unknown region of the galaxy.

The heroes' team is comprised of Captain Marvel, Captain America, Wasp, She-Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Professor X, Storm, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Lockheed,Spider-Man, Mr. Fantastic, Thing, Human Torch and Magneto. The heroes quickly realize that they are not alone as a second space station hangs not far away, in perfect view from theirs. This is where a similar group of villains has been transported, consisting of Enchantress, Ultron, Absorbing Man, Wrecker, Thunderball, Piledriver, Bulldozer, Kang, Galactus, Lizard, Molecule Man, Doctor Octopus and Doctor Doom.

Eventually, in issue #10 (Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #10 - Death to the Beyonder) Dr Doom manages to steal the powers of The Beyonder himself!

#10 - Galactus decides that, instead of absorbing the energy of Battleworld, he will absorb the energy of Taa II, his homeworld, instead. His homeworld is disintegrated, but suddenly the energy is ripped away from him and streams toward Doombase. Captain Marvel flies there at lightspeed to investigate. She sees Doom in a machine, absorbing Galactus' energy, and tells the heroes via Professor X's telepathy.

Doom gets up and is startled by the new awareness and powers he has gained. He tries to accept the new limitlessness of omniscience and omnipotence. He notices Captain Marvel and freezes her in place. When the telepathic link is cut off, the heroes get in a ship and fly there. On the trip, the X-Men and other heroes argue over the role of Magneto and mutants.

Doom surveys the scene: he sees that the Beyonder's portal is still open, but is his prize now important now that he has Galactus' power? Or, does the Beyonder now sit as the one worthy challenge left for Doom? When Doom followed Galactus into the Beyond-realm in the first issue, his armor analyzed the Beyonder's energies; he now uses that information to make a new weapon against the Beyonder, hidden in his armor's chestplate.

The heroes arrive, but Doom has left. Klaw, now reduced to just a head after having his body turned into Doom's machine, explains where Doom went. The planet is shocked by a mighty tremor as Doom attacks the Beyonder. The heroes consider trying to revive Galactus as their only hope against such powerful foes. As they check around the planet, Colossus sees that Zsaji has been hurt, and tells Johnny Storm, who doesn't care due to his concern over a hurt Reed Richards. This enrages the jealous Colossus, but the fallout from Doom's attack forestalls any further action on his part.

The battle between Doom and the Beyonder sends out enormous energies into our universe, almost snuffing out Battleworld's sun. Doom is starting to lose. He sends a hologram down to the heroes, asking for their power. Magneto almost agrees, but hesitates. The other heroes knock him down, and Doom's hologram disappears. Doom is now helpless and the Beyonder begins to vivisect him. Even in the extreme pain of this procedure, Doom's will is unstoppable. He reaches toward his chestplate.

The heroes release the villains from their cells as the base falls apart. Captain America and Wolverine, who had argued in the ship in the last issue, now come to a position of mutual respect over each other's bravery and initiative.

Suddenly, an enormous figure in the shape of Dr. Doom appears on the planet. The heroes prepare to fight, but then Doom shrinks and tells them the war is over.

Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment - Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom Team Up.

n this book The Ancient One calls a gathering of sorcerers to the Temple Of Three in Indonesia. As the wizards arrive at the temple they are introduced, yet none garner the awe as the sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange, and none get the scorn as the dictator of Latveria Dr. Doom.

As soon as all of the wizards arrive, the Vishante consisting of Oshtur, Hogath, and Agomotto, address them and tell them that there will be a contest. The task is to free the ancient one from a crystal. The prize is the title of sorcerer supreme.

After he is told to deactivate the technology in his gloves, that only wizardry and not technology is allowed in the contest, Dr. Doom complies, and the battle is on. One by one the sorcerers fall, finding it useless to call on the three for help since they are the adversaries, and noticing that any attack is reflected back at the attacker, Dr. Strange notices that only he and Dr. Doom are left.

Realizing what needs to be done, Dr. Strange ends the contest, and retains his title as the Sorcerer Supreme. The title this time comes with a wish. Not for the winner, but granted by the winner to the one who is in second place.

Fearing he would ask for help to rule the world, Dr. Strange argues to no avail. Yet Dr. Doom assures him he needs no help to do that, and would assure him that all he will askof him is to help free his mothers soul from hell.

Iron Man #149 - Doomquest! & Iron Man #150 - Knightmare! - The Doomquest Story Arc.

Stark International has just filled a huge and very profitable technological order for a distant foreign country. Unfortunately for them, they find out just a little bit late that the cargo is heading for LATVERIA, and the components have been ordered by none other than DOCTOR DOOM!

Iron Man is sent to retrieve the order and re-compensate Latveria, stating that they cannot sell their goods to someone who might use it for World Threatening purposes. He manages to stop the ship en route to make its delivery. Predictably, Doctor Doom isn't too happy about having to return the goods, and sends mechanical robots to snatch back the cargo that he feels are already his. Knowing the property is just too dangerous to leave in Doom's hands, Tony Stark reluctantly makes a trip over to Latveria, where he must confront Doom and retrieve the cargo once more.

Naturally, Doom is waiting for Iron Man, and no sooner than the two meet, then they are off and fighting! Meanwhile, Doctor Doom’s long-suffering assistant Hauptmann lurks in the shadows, eyeing the battle. He has been formulating a plan to get revenge on Doom for killing his brother years ago, and the opportunity to execute his plan seems to be coming to light- As Doom and Iron Man grapple each other, they unwittingly find themselves atop Doom’s time machine. Before they know it, Hauptmann has thrown the switch and sent them spiraling into the past! As soon as the deed is done, Hauptmann smashes the Time Machine to bits – knowing that without the device, Doom and Iron Man are trapped in the past –FOREVER!

As Doom's Time Machine hurtles the dueling armored men into the past, they merely perceive it as a huge explosion, and believe they have been expelled into Doom’s courtyard. Only after looking around does Iron Man stop the fight to realize they've come a lot farther that that- They are in CAMELOT!

Doctor Doom quickly deduces what has happened. His assistant has sent them into the past. It had been set to come to Camelot for Doom had planned on making the journey to consult with the great sorceress Morgana Le Fey. Thanks to the turn of events, he has arrived- only in a much more permanent state than he’d planned! They haven’t been there for very long before they are confronted by Guards who attempt to take them prisoners and are taken to be judged by King Arthur.

Iron Man is quick to make peace with the king and demonstrates some of his armor’s abilities. Doom is not so forthcoming, and states that in his homeland HE is a king, and won’t lower himself to perform “parlour tricks”. They are kept as permanent guests for the time being. Doom is able to wring a girl’s mind for information on Morgana Le Fey’s whereabouts. Once the knowledge is obtained, he immediately leaves the castle, locates Morgana’s Castle and offers his services to the Dark Sorceress.

Doom explains to the Sorceress how he has been visiting the great magicians through time using his timecube machine with one purpose: to free his mother from the prisons of hell. Morgana Le Fey listens and strikes a bargain with Doom- she will help him if he will lead her undead soldiers in the final battle with King Arthur. Doom readily agrees.

And so the battle is begun- the good side of King Arthur led by the Golden Avenger, and Morgana Le Fey’s undead army led by the sinister Doctor Doom!

The battle is raging until Tony puts two and two together- Le Fey’s Soldiers are Undead, so the only way to truly stop them is to stop them at the source- Morgana Le Fey herself! While the battle goes on, he leaves and makes his way the the Castle, where he starts another battle- of science versus magic! In the end, Morgana is defeated, and she leaves the land, never to return.

Meanwhile, back at the battlefield, once the undead soldiers become inanimate again, he knows that Le Fey has gone, and his chance of rescuing his tormented mother has once again slipped from his grasp! In a rage, he speeds over to the castle, and smashes in on a startled Iron Man. He threatens to kill Iron Man, then shocks the Avenger by adding…”Someday” And Why? The battle over, even Doom must concede that there is no reason for him to exist here anymore. He decides the time is right for his return to his own time and reveals his plan to Iron Man:

It is just possible that they CAN return to the present, but only with their COMBINED GENIUSES and CANNIBALIZING BOTH OF THEIR ARMORED SUITS and using the intricate circuitry to create a device that might warp time around them and return them to the present day! Yes, they realize the only way they will get back home is to work TOGETHER! The two minds work together all through the night, and by dawn have come up with an elaborate construction wired into both armored suits for power. They make a truce that if the device should happen to work, they will allow each other to go their own way.

When the final connection is made, the fabric of time rips around them, and the two find themselves back in the present time, the collaborative construct reduce to molten slag around their fried mechanical parts. Doom leaves with a remark: “We WILL Meet Again”, to which a weary Iron Man simply states, ”I’ll Be Waiting.”

Then the two turn around and go their separate ways.

Doom 2099 - One of the best 2099 titles.

#1 - In the year 2099 we see two Clan Zefiro Gypsies, Wire and Xandra, trying to sell some illegally obtained data on the streets of Antikva Vilago, Latveria. The deal is broken up when a guardsmen patrol hovercraft shoots the buyer and chases Wire and Xandra out into the wilderness.

They seek refuge in the ruins of an old castle when they see a man, in a cloak and armored suit, suddenly appear in a flash of energy. The man speaks of being in pain and then looks around wondering what happened to his castle. That is when the guardsmen catch up to Wire and Xandra.

The guardsmen tell all three to stand down. The mysterious man is angry at being told what to do. He asks, "Don't you know who I am?". He then blasts energy from his gauntlet, destroying the guardsmen, while shouting, "I am Doom!".

After talking with Wire and Xandra, Doom seeks out the current ruler of Latveria, Tyger Wylde. Tyger Wylde is getting a Tarot reading by Fortune, another Clan Zefiro Gypsy, when Doom blasts his way in. Doom confronts Wylde, who doesn't believe Doom's claim to being former ruler of Latveria, and quickly finds his armor to be out of date technology.

Wylde defeats Doom, badly injuring Doom's face in the process, and orders his henchman Zone to find out who sent this assumed assassin. Fortune claims that she will send the body of Doom to be investigated but instead she takes the body back to her gypsy camp, claiming the Tarot cards tell her he is valuable.

Doom awakens in the gypsy camp. He strikes an alliance with the gypsies after learning they are Zefiro, just like him. Wire looks into how Doom's armor can be modernized and finds some prototype technology being created on an island run by the Pixel Corporation.

Doom leads his gypsies to an aeroplane that he long ago hid in a mountain. They then fly to an island off the Peruvian Coast that is a secret Pixel research facility. They have an easy time getting inside because they discover someone else has recently broken in. None the less, they find Dr. Quinones, who they have come to see.

Doom offers Dr. Quinones her freedom, from indentured servitude to Pixel, in exchange for using her cutting edge technology on him. She agrees performs a massive surgery on Doom. During the surgery Doom has dreams of pain and wonders whether he is truly Victor Von Doom.

Doom is upgraded with a Cybermesh interface between his new nanotech brain enhancement and his new adamantium lanxide armor. It is lighter, stronger, and more powerful than his old armor. He then declares, "Doctor Doom is dead. Long live Doom!".
