Your New(er) 52 Nightwing

#1 Posted by dropkickjake (52 posts) - - Show Bio

Game is simple- If you had written Nightwing New 52 from the start of the launch, how would you have done so?

Points to hit:

What city would you base him in (Short description)?

What supporting cast would you give him?

What villains would you give him?

What day job/ civilian life would you give Dick?

Other potentially interesting points:

How would you incorporate the Batfamily crossovers/events of Night of Owls, Death of the Family, and Requiem?

Blue instead of red

Blüdhaven

cop by day

But to be honest, other than the red themed suit, I love what Kyle Higgins has done on Nightwing, with the exception of Dick being the heir to a talon gimmick, but I believe that was when DeFalco was writing the cross over for CoO.

I guess I should specify that this isn't a "I Hate Higgins," thread. I generally find his work to range from a C+ to a solid A (DeFalco wrote the zero issue and the issues with Shiva, btw. Both were barely C- in my opinion). I thought the Chicago arc was brilliant (even if the ending was a bit flat for me), and Traps and Trapezes, along with Night of Owls, was fantastic as well. This is more meant just to be a fun "My ideal nightwing status quo is..." thread.

I too wish that Nightwing had been stationed in Bludhaven from issue #1. That city is more tied to Nightwing than any other, IMO. I've never heard the officer Dick Grayson story, but I like the idea.

@dropkickjake: I didn't think this was a Higgins hate thread, no worries. I was just saying that I'm very satisfied with how he's taking Nightwing that I personally would want to change anything (except the suit)

Also Dick was a cop for a little while while he was in 'Haven, that's the story. Lol

Bludhaven--The timeline of events that are still canon is still a little wonky, so i'm not sure if Bludhaven was ever bombed by Chemo and the Society, or whether or not Dick ever worked there at all, but i'd still have him start the reboot off there, either returning or making an entrance after his time as Batman ended.

Supporting cast really depends again on whether or not he was ever there to begin with. If he was, i'd pull from his old cast and write it so that some people survived the explosion, etc. If not, then i'd probably go the original route. Give him an apartment, some neighbors, have him form contacts with the police (His own Jim Gordon so to speak), etc. I honestly think I may even have him be on the police force like he was before, if only because I always viewed that as a cool, unique, and overall smart way to handle business, though it comes with it's own flaws as well.

Villains- Some version of Blockbuster, Deathstroke, Cheshire, maybe Shrike? I'd also create about 3 new ones within the first two arcs I wrote.

Job- Mentioned it above, but definitely make him a cop. Only job that really makes sense for him in my eyes, though I could also see him as a solo private eye.

Batfamily events- Not every member of the family needs to be present for every event. Plain and simple that's just the honest truth. I wouldn't have involved Dick in the Court of Owls fiasco at all. It's a big world, and crime never sleeps. It would not be hard or unbelievable for Dick to be dealing with events elsewhere. (And if I was controlling every aspect of the character he'd also be part of a team as well, so that's one more reason he could disappear. It used to happen all the time in the old days when he was with the New Teen Titans.) Death of the Family i'd probably handle the same, or just have Joker track Dick down to attack him, and then Dick travels to Gotham to see what's up. In terms of Damian's death I would make sure Dick's reaction was shown within the main Batman comic, but have him back in Bludhaven for a private moment of grief, with scenes of him taking his anguish and rage out on villains in the city, etc. I'd never have him enter too many Bat Family events however, I cannot stress that enough. If i'm writing the comic, and there's time to include him in the event, and it makes sense (Like I haven't had him go to Gotham in a while) then sure i'll send him over to help out. If i'm in the middle of a major arc/crime-spree/case in Bludhaven, then there's no way i'd derail what I was doing just so he can make a cameo in Gotham.

I also wouldn't have give Dick the black and red suit. It's decent, but it's redundant when the other Bat-Sons have the same color scheme.

What city would you base him in?

I would have reimagined him to be in Bludhaven. The city still has its history from the Pre-52, but it's been rebuilt from the ground up. I know, it sounds farfetched, but if DC was willing to let Babs walk again, then rebuilding a nuked city is no biggie lol.

What supporting cast would you give him?

Non-superheroes for his frequent supporting cast. Give him people to interact with in his apartment or at his day job. Sonia Branch is actually a pretty good character for Dick in the New 52 so I'd probably work her in. As for cameos, I would still have his old friends frequently visit him. Wally, Donna, and the bat-family come to mind.

What villains would you give him?

Deathstroke will once again be his archnemesis. I'd keep Lady Vic and Brutale in his rogues gallery (both were moved to Batwing and Blue Beetle books, respectively). Add in some mobsters, because street leveler stories are most fun when you have gang wars. Metahumans would be fun, but no one who could surpass Deathstroke since that would overshadow him as the archnemesis.

What day job/ civilian life would you give Dick?

Give him a couple of odd jobs. I liked watching him move from bartender, cop, temp male model, then to Wayne Tech consultant in the pre-52. It keeps the stories lively and I would like to see that happen again.

How would you incorporate the Batfamily crossovers/events of Night of Owls, Death of the Family, and Requiem?

I actually liked the way Higgins did it. I probably wouldn't change a thing.

I'm agreeing with most everything on here

Blue would have been a must, set him apart from all the other Bat-sons. Want to see a mix between the V into the finger stripes costume and the YJ show costume.

Bludhaven

Cop is the way to go, Batman helps people out of guilt, Grayson because he enjoys it, and needs to. He wouldn't be able to stand not helping people with his day life as well. Though I distinctly like the bartender one as well.

Deathstroke is a must. Really enjoying the Chicago arc, and blockbuster-esk villian would be good.

I think less Bat family oriented cross-ins. Nightwing does best as that one everyone is friends with, connects the rest of the DC universe with Bat family, even more so than Bats himself.

I like N52 but it feels like Nightwng wasn't as good as he was, maybe a few more highlight comics, especially a display of Willpower, Combat, and Deduction/Intelligence. Deathstroke would be perfect for the combat, and maybe willpower. Cop life would display the Deductiion

Points to hit:

City: I'd keep him in Chicago. Bludhaven was nuked, no reason to take out the whole New York saga just because they feel like Bludhaven is the city nightwing HAS to stay in.

Supporting cast: Same as current, Joey and Mike, but I would totally add Wally, Donna and his friends from pre-dcnu to show up commonly and help out with missions. Like a Nightwing and Friends sort of story every other arc

Villains: Would enjoy seeing Deathstroke as a common villains, the old ones he used to have pre dcnu, and some really cool new ones. Not just a bunch of Batman villains

Day job/ civilian life: I just don't want him to do the jobs he has done in the past, not a bartender, not a cop, not a model or a museum worker. I believe a reboot shouldn't be just redoing everything done in the past in the same way, he should do something different, hell make him work at McDonalds... or the DC version of it?

Oh and I'd keep him Red. I love the idea of the Red being a representation of his time as Robin, sure Blue made him kind of stand out from the family, in the way out of the Bat's shadow, and Red does the exact opposite and makes him very obviously included in that family of red. Not saying that when he was blue it wasn't obviously part of the family.

Other potentially interesting points:

The thing I would do completely different would just try to keep everything I could in continuity Right when he became Nightwing, after working with the Teen Titans (Fab Five) for a year, he went to Bludhaven, did all that (obviously minor changes) then it was nuked. Went to New York, did all that, went home to Gotham to do the Batman saga with Damian while Bruce was gone, then goes back to being himself at Gotham (then the whole New 52 starts.) The Crossovers I believe were handled fine, Night of Owls about him fighting his great grandpa was fine, nothing bad, and him fighting Joker and all that said about him making Batman the weakest, which is kind of like saying he means the most to Batman, was fine. I just would make it where he wouldn't of have to struggle so hard. Honestly the only thing wrong with the new 52 for Nightwing is that his time as Robin is screwed up and maybe cut short, his ventures as Nightwing and Batman seem to be fine though.

Is there ANY significant difference between pre New 52 and after New 52 Grayson, besides the origin change and the symbol on the suit becoming red?...(didnt like it,always dug the blue)

Lack of history with the Teen Titans. (Probably extends to other teams as well, such as the JLA and the Outsiders.)

i just kinda wished he would have stayed batman

There's threads that discuss the difference. Yes, there's quite a difference. A lot of articles around say not much has changed with Nightwing but history wise, A LOT is different. He's the most changed former Robin out of the Batfamily. Don't believe articles that say that. Chances are they've never read much of Nightwing. :/

I wish that sometimes, too. But DC wouldn't do that and many of his fans wouldn't like that, either. I for one enjoyed his time as Batman. Was a nice change of pace with a Batman that wasn't a jerk to his teammates occasionally and worked well with others.

Same. Really thought DC might give it a go and have him make the transition like Wally did, but you know, that status qou has to remain the same, SMH.

Alright. I posted this like a billion years ago (or 4 months ago, but definitely one of the two). I'd say its high time I actually post my own two cents

City: I'd have him in Bludhaven, but not the overly grim dark/DC's Hell's Kitchen that Dixon wrote. I'd reinvent it to be more of a Las Vegas meets New Orleans type city. It'd be known as a destination for fun of all types, casinos, theme parks, night life, theater, et c. It would still have a corrupt underside and a problem with organized crime, but it would have a bright and inviting face. This would better reflect Dick the way that Gotham reflects Bruce. I'd also make New Carthage a neighboring "twin city," because...

Day job/ civilian life: I'd send Dick to college. Dick Grayson, and outgoing and attractive young guy who enjoys the spotlight, would have become quite the media darling after being adopted by Gotham's richest son. In order to make it unthinkable that Dick Grayson could be a caped crusader, he would hae adopted the persona of an unaffected, rich party boy. Nightwing would want to stay in Bludhaven because he loves the city and it needs a protector, but Dick Grayson would need a reason to be there as well. He would enroll in Hudson U, not declare a major, and probably miss tons of class. That all makes sense with his previous persona.

Supporting cast: With him back in college, I'd make use of some of the supporting cast from that era, but obviously reinvent them quite a bit. Lori Elton, the love interest of the story would be an incredibly motivate Criminal Justice major. She would, as such, spurn the advances of Dick, who she would see as a rich pretty boy who doesn't care about anything. Chief McDonald would be retooled into a detective who has spent years as a uniformed patrol officer, even some time in SWAT, but is new to the detective branch and thus has to fight for respect in that department. His years on the force has given him a handful of incredibly loyal officers in several departments. I'd introduce something of a lifelong best friend for Dick, someone who he's kept in touch with since leaving the circus. This guy would be his 'Alfred' if you will; he'd learn his secret early on.

Villains: Bludhaven would need a vice lord, though I'm not sure if I'd want it to be Blockbuster or not. Deathstroke would obviously need to be included. Professor Pyg would be great. I'd also probably include the Dixon hired guns Stallion and Lady Vic. I also think a few NTT era villains would be great to include, possibly Mammoth.
