That's right who could replace Dick Grayson as Nightwing? With Joker's inevitable return, Dick's life is on the line. Say worst comes and Dick dies! Fingers crossed of course! In all seriousness though, who do you think is fit enough in the New 52 to replace him? Personally no one comes to mind for me. It'd defiantly be hard on me to have a newcomer come in and replace him. But who do you think could replace Dick Grayson as Nightwing not necessarily in upcoming events, but in general who do you think would be fitting? Let me know!
Dick Grayson
Character » Dick Grayson appears in 9487 issues.
As the first Robin, Dick Grayson was the most famous sidekick in comic book history. As he ventured forth on his own, he formed the Teen Titans and became their leader. When the boy became a man, he became the independent hero known as Nightwing.
Who could replace Dick Grayson?
Nobody. He'd be revived in short order. Let's just speak hypothetically however and say he does stay dead for years or that an Elseworlds was written, i'd say Damien would take up the mantle at some point, though he wouldn't be able to live up to Dick.
I don't expect to see him die. But, IF it were to happen, the only person I could see doing it would be Tim Drake. With him being shaky on the Teen Titans and not having his own title, he's the only person I can see hopping over to take up the mantle without an enormous backlash.
NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but if it were to happen then the only person who could do it would be Tim...but Nightwing isn't really a replaceable identity either
I agree I don't see him dying. Its just those tweets from Kyle Higgins has got me all worried for the fate of Dick. That would be the worse I really dislike Tim Drake he needs to stay as Red Robin. If he became the new Nightwing I would drop all my Bat-Family related comics. Lol!

Harper Row perhaps...
I prefer to think of her as a street-smart version of Oracle.
But I can see it.

Cassandra Cain would be my first pick to take up the mantle of Nightwing. :)
That'd be insane.
And I would want to watch.
Yes, Just yes. If he is to die, this should happen.Don't really ever see it happening... but if it did, I say have Babs take up the identity to honor him (hey, she's Nightwing in Smallville, could work here, too), which then opens up the Batgirl mantle for Cass/Steph
Anyone can put on the Nightwing costume, but that doesn't mean they can replace Dick. He is one of the few characters (aside from Superman) that connects with other heroes all over the DC universe. Not only is he respected by heroes, but his gymnastic prowess has no real rival. Others trained by Bats would be the best to fill in (Steph, Cass, Barb, or Tim), but they wouldn't have the same effect.
I think people enjoy more the idea of Cassandra Cain assuming Nightwing's position, rather than actually care for her taking on Dick's role as that hero, if I'm making any sense.
It's been demonstrated time and again. Nightwing is an extension of Dick's persona. It's simply not a rank you achieve or something you're promoted to. Jason Todd replicated the title out of warped admiration for his older brother. Cheyenne Freemont was a groupie. On planet Earth, Dick Graysons' deepest vigilant desires are exhibited as Nightwing.
If anyone was going to replace Dick, and for the record I'd only hope to see him leave the Nightwing mantle so as to take over from Bruce as Batman in a few years time, then it''d be Damian. Note that I am talking about Damian taking over in about 8 years time when I assume Dick would have no choice but to takeover from Bruce who at this point would be ageing and no longer as capable of filling the role. It'd be fitting for Damian to take on the role given how Dick is his mentor and the one he respects most in the family. For me the idea that a person can go straight from being Robin to being Batman is very unrealistic even in comics, we know that Damian is next in line to the cowl after Dick (can't ever see Tim becoming Batman and I'd kill any writer who tried to make him Nightwing) and it would make sense for him to take on the Nightwing mantle so he could experience some real responsibility and independence.
@Icarusflies: why does everybody mention her? she is a 0 in the comics. she had i appearance alfred's shoes have more relevance than her.
Nightwing isn't a "job" to replace in the Bat-family pecking order. Nightwing is Dick Grayson. While Robin is a "Batman's Sidekick" Nightwing was created by and for Dick Grayson.

Why would his life be on the line?
The Joker is returning and I think he could cause serious harm.

No you're making perfect sense. Its like I said for Damian. He'd take on the mantle, but he wouldn't be "replacing" Dick. He wouldn't have the same effect or garner the same amount of trust. He'd be wearing the costume, nothing more.

I'm beginning to warm up to the idea of Damian becoming Nightwing. I haven't read up on Batman Inc past issues 3 or 4 but I saw an image of Damian dressed in a different costume on one of CV's news articles and it almost looks like he took inspiration from Nightwing's design.

Even though I strongly oppose the the idea of anyone replacing Nightwing, I feel like this is the most feasible option.
REPLACE Dick Grayson?! Are you crazy? No one can replace him, he's too unique. I might just explode if they killed off Dick, it would be too tragic. I can't even fathom the response (and by response I mean angry mob with super-powered pitchforks) if that were to happen.
In short, I am appalled by anyone willing to think he is replacable. (Interesting [yet disturbing...so disturbing] chain of thought though :3)

This seems relevant given people's views on this subject
Lol. Awesome.
Way awesome.
@DarkKnightDetective: Tim has his own identity now. Just because his brother falls in combat doesn't mean he takes up Nightwing's sword. Being the cerebral chessmaster that he is, Red Robin most likely exacts revenge like a magnificent bastard and earns the reputation of being Batman's right hand man since Dick is no longer there.
Also guys, Cassandra and Dick weren't exactly fond of each other. Lets not forget about their trust issues and NW knocking her lights out. When Batman died I still remember how she ditched her post as Batgirl and left for Hong Kong stating Bruce is the only guy she'd ever follow. Mind you, Gotham was in shambles at the time and Dick was doing everything in his power to restore the balance. -__- She has a stronger argument for replacing Red Robin to be real, lol.

I like this. If Dick did die. The ENTIRE family would pretty much leave bruce and blame him for the death what Dick is to the family, he is the heart that Bruce could never have been. Damian was the only one who was close to Dick; probably THE closest to him. If anyone wanted to seek revenge or take up the Nightwing mantle it would be damian.
Id like to see that. But my guess is they will kill off Alfred.
