The story opens in the casino of Narbonne, a small town. Baron Max Riber is engaged in a game of chemin de fer, but has lost all the money, he decides to leave. There also comes the lawyer Bonard, a person well known to people for his generosity and good heart. Riber fled to the suburbs with the intention to end his life, but before he could kill himself, Regan and his secretary Bonard, stop him, throwing the mask: Bonard is a loan-shark that is cloaked in the air of the Good Samaritan, and Regan helps the act. Riber owes money to Bonard, who convinces him to steal the jewels of his wife Luisa. Riber makes the theft and bring the jewels to the lender, but it greatly depreciates the value of the precious and gives a paltry sum to the baron, who in horror and regret what he did, goes away, but while walking through the park, thinking about his fate, is attacked by Diabolik, who had seen the stolen jewels. Riber faints from fear, Diabolik and robs him of the little money he had. At the same time, the office of Bonard, Regan claims half of the stolen goods, but Bonard refuses, and the result is a struggle in which Bonard is killed by Regan, which wastes no time in taking possession of the jewels. Regan, however, is unaware that Diabolik has seen it all. The criminal chases the murderess with intent to steal jewelry, but he does give up a round, for the moment.

The next day, to avoid arousing suspicion, Regan went to work as usual and stopped to breakfast at the bar. All of a sudden sees Bonard from his window and, incredulous and scared, she faints. He is taken in the office of the same Bonard, where "the lawyer" does find. Regan lashes out again at Bonard, but this time has the worse, and he understands that Bonard is Diabolik, who wants the jewels.

Meanwhile, Ginko is still lost in the reports on the escape of Diabolik, when Gustavo Garian comes and invites him to dinner to a night club, so to give him a respite from work. At the night they meet the beautiful Mexican dancer Diana Cruz.. Ginko, however, when he is forced to leave the room because Baron Riber was reported missing , Diana Cruz has an illness and disappears.

Diabolik and Regan, meanwhile, arrive at the bell tower of the church in the country where Regan has hidden jewels. Regan goes up to reach the bell, but, sensing that Diabolik will play a practical joke, empty the box and hides the precious on him, throwing the casket to the criminal, who, in a moment, it drops the ladder and escape. Regan is then locked to the clapper of the bell and it will stay there all night. The next day, during Mass, attended by Ginko, Louise Riber and the same Diabolik in disguise, Regan dies by the clapper of the bell and smashed jewelry rain below. Ginko, who was here to investigate the disappearance of Riber, finds himself questioning Bonard, on why his secretary had stolen the jewels on the Riber. Diabolik Ginko does believe that he knew nothing, and shortly thereafter, the office of Bonard, while rummaging through the papers of the lender, is visited by Payot, a poor cop who needs money. Diabolik, magnanimously, granting him the sum he needs to get rid of the way quickly, then runs to court to steal the jewels from the archive Riber findings. Ginko travels from Bonard and discovers, in bed, the body of the real lawyer. Realizing the truth, he runs the court, he went where he knew his man, and it does put under siege. Diabolik is seen lost, but his help comes at Payot who passes secretly through the back door.

The case is not yet closed: Massimo Riber has not yet been found, but recognizes Gustavo Garian picture of the jewels stolen a pin that had seen him with Diana Cruz, then go home inspector and adjutant of the dancer, where they found the baron Diana's lover when he got the pin.
