    Wow... Just... Wow

Coming into this Wednesday I hadn't been keeping up with Detective Comics, but after hearing my local shop owners rave about it I decided to pick up the latest issues from Hunger City until now.  I can definatly see why this is one of the most talked about books out there right now.  Scott Snyder is the perfect writer for this and I'm excited to see him write the rebooted Batman.  This issue itself is by far the best issue I have read all year.  From the first page there is an overwhelming sense of dread that makes you fear what might happen in this issue.  The tension mounts throughout, building from an image that would usally be reserved for the final page of a story, to an ending that actually has me worried and I have no idea where it will go next (Although as evidenced by one of the new series, it won't be permanent).  As evidenced by the cover, The Joker plays a big part in this issue, and boy is he creepy.  Jock and Snyder portray him as I've always imagined him, a dark, brooding figure that speaks and moves almost ghost like, while still maintaining a sense of menace.  If you've been reading you'll notice I really haven't discussed the story, well it's for a reason.  I can honestly say that if I spoke about the story it would be ruined.  I was suprised multiple times while reading through this, and that's part of what makes it a great read.  All in all this was a spectacular issue that I recommend all Batman fans to read, although it is very dark and not for the faint of heart.

One of the things I love about Snyder's run is how mounts the horror and tension.  Like many issues before it, this comic is spin-chilling and pulse pounding.    One of the biggest challenges any writer has is undertaking iconic characters.  Snyder really nails Dick Grayson.  He's just the "happy" Batman, he can be dark, cynical, and an intelligent detective.  I have to say, Snyder's writing (from the Bat-titles and American Vampire) often focuses on history and personifying towns and cities.  H...

      Snyder continues to impress. 0

Scott Snyder's run on Detective Comics has, admittedly, been the first time I've ever felt myself seriously drawn in to this particular bat book. His penchant for writing Batman more as a crime drama than a whizz-bang super-hero comic makes his stories both compelling and grounded in what feels like a chillingly real world, and it shows in what is building to be the ultimate culmination of pieces he's been laying down for the past few months.  The Good: This is the best Batman storyline out ther...
