Amazingly Gripping Origin Story
Comics need to be more like this. By that, I mean three things. Firstly, they need to get rid of all the outlandish "super" concepts and get closer to the core of reality. Comics need grit, realism, darkness, humanity, things that people can relate to. When the supernatural gets thrown in there, the reader loses the connection to the characters and the situations. Secondly, the art is amazing. The last five pages in particular are some of the creapiest and breathtaking things I've ever seen in my life. Thirdly, comics need to have a long story that takes place over a long period of time, rather than a short and quick plot that lapses for a few issues.
Up until I read this issue, I was convinced that Detective Comics #858 was the best issue that I have read in the new Batwoman stories. Now? Well to be honest, last issue was amazing. I'm not sure which I like better. Last issue was so gripping and this issue is too. I am amazed that two issues can be so consistantly good like this. That astounds me.
This arc has blown my mind. If you have followed my reviews of this series, you will know that I was fairly critical of some of the previous issues, saying that they depended too heavily on art. In the past three issues, I have to take back what I said. The storytelling has been amazing. This is how stories should be written. I think if all comics were written this way, the medium would be so much more influential than it is currently. Few books excite me this much.
Seeing Kate's past is so fun. This story is just wonderful. The script was done excelently. 100 points! (Not that I actually have any control over a "point system") Aaaanyway, I tend to get off topic. This book is mindblowingly good. Buy it. But don't just buy this. Buy all of the "Batwoman" books, particularly those in this current three issue arc, "Go". It's only three issues. Or, even better, you can buy them in the hardcover format Batwoman: Elegy.
