1. "THE MAN WITH A MILLION FACES!": (Batman) a circus is in town and one of its star attractions is John Gillen, the man with a million faces, a disguise artist who never shows his real face and can make himself look like anyone quickly. Gillen happens to be an old friend of Dick's parents so he introduces Bruce to him after the show.
hours later a famed actor named Hubert Harper draws a crowd just by walking down the street, causing a distraction that allows 2 thieves to rob a jewelry store. this isn't the first such crime but when asked Harper claims he was at home giving a party at the time. naturally, Batman suspects Gillen, who admits to impersonating Harper but claims to have no knowledge of the robbery. he tells them several times someone has left notes on his dresser telling him to impersonate certain people at certain places and times or they will reveal the secret he now trusts Batman with. the reason he hides his face is that he is an ex-con and didn't think the circus would hire him if they knew.
worried the police would never believe his innocence if they found out about his connection Gillen runs before Batman can stop him. in order to catch the thieves and keep them from revealing the secret Batman takes Gillion's place in the circus while Dick signs on as an acrobat.
soon, at the thieves' instruction, Batman is walking near Gotham museum as the governor, distracting the patrolmen with his presence. surmising the thieves were already in the museum Batman and Robin enter and catch them in the act but it is too dark to tell who they are and they use a gun that shoots white flour to get away and then evade the cops in stollen guard's uniforms. Later the dynamic duo finds that gun in the prop tent at the circus, cleaned or fingerprints so it could have been used by anyone.
The next day "Gillen" is ordered to appear at the airport as a famous flyer named Marty Mallen but Batman arranges for the real Mallen to be there so he and Robin can focus on keeping an eye out for trouble. they see a jewel courier being forced into a car. our heroes give chase but the thieves jump from their car, forcing Batman to save the cursor from crashing while they get away.
thinking Gillen tipped Batman off the thieves caused a wall of his tent to fall, revealing Batman. Batman puts on a show to convince people he is just Gillen in disguise with the young acrobat impersonating Robin. during the act, the thieves shoot a rope Robin is balanced on with a flat arrow that cuts it. Batman acts fast to save him but is able to secure a line to himself in the process, convincing people he isn't really Batman. the thieves are caught with the gun that fired the arrow and tricked into revealing that the jewels were hidden in plain sight, replacing fake jewels in circus decorations with real ones.
Gillen is still worried he will be fired if the circus finds out about his past but Batman urges him to come clean so he does and is accepted.
