Bollocks and old Bastards
This is the victory of cynism, it's an amazing display of how a broken man, ex British spy, who cares for nothing and no one, saves the day and proves that in real life is better to be the anti hero than a nice boy scout - I believe this first arc story (issues 1 to 6) is one of the best works of Warren Ellis, running away a little from his home turf that is science fiction and exploring more of a noir, thriller and spionage environment - Michael Jones lives in L.A., his body is corruptet due to several experiments that were made, his only conforts are to smoke pot and pop pills, he has a strange definition of friendship and is a private detective, hired directly from an ex spy too to retrieve an item for an old retired colonel, that's the kickstart to this amazing story, with great twists, characters and plot, proving there's tons of excellent material in comics stories that would thrive and sell a lot if adapted to the movies - the creative team combo of Ellis + JHWIII was a hit in the face, JWIII done an amazing job here, dividing the panels, combining the frames, creating an ambient for Ellis' narrative to develop and grow, intensifying the process of thrill - also Vilarrubia's colors were awesome too, creating different tones of shades and textures. Note that this is for mature readers only and highly recommended!
