A deliriously fun read that makes brave choices.
If this book is able to maintain the high level of quality these first two issues have displayed, then it could swiftly wind up becoming one of my absolute favorite Marvel books. The cast is a great group of characters (and set to expand with the eventual inclusions of Nick Fury and Hank Pym as well), the art is cheery and dynamic, the random bottom-of-the-page blurbs are a riot, and all in all Matt Fraction's writing (which has been very hit-and-miss this past year considering the BIG, very high profile miss that was "Fear Itself") is spot on.
This book manages to pull off a rare feat that really sets it apart from the rest of the superhero books on the racks today. It manages to be a quirky, FUNNY book without resorting to being a "funny book". Oftentimes, the blending of humor with superheroics winds up leaving a book with the overall feel of a flat-out parody. This is not the case here. Despite the obvious humor (and even slapstick) on display here, this book maintains a level of epic-ness. This is just one of the book's bold choices. Another is to open a high profile new ongoing series with a fight against an obscure villain. If this title manages to run a decent amount of time with Fraction at the helm, I'm sure these are just the first of many eyebrow-raising choices he'll make and the book will be all the better for it. I'm already eager for another installment.
