A dead pool is a gambling game based around who dies next. After Wade failed out of Weapon X he was thrown into a prison where they experimented on failed weapon x projects. The inmate had a dead pool game going and since Wade had a healing factor he was really unlikely to die so he topped the list with the biggest pay out since the odd of him dying were really unlikely, so he dubbed himself "Deadpool."

What a rush of nostalgia explaining that gave me... I miss 90's Deadpool where he was more then a punchline. v.v
