The Merc’s Mouthin’ with his Screenwriters
I’ll toss my ninja throwing star up to Ryan Reynolds - - I can’t readily recall a leading man this gung-ho about a comics-to-film project. You’d figure that with the GREEN LANTERN movie charging up, the DEADPOOL spin-off would slide to his back-burner. That he’d forget about it! But not so! When asked by MTV News at Sundance regarding the Merc with a Mouth, Reynolds assured that he’s been talking daily to the movie’s screenwriters, ZOMBIELAND’S Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, about making the script true to the comics.
Truth be told, I remain a might dubious over whether the DEADPOOL movie’s still going to happen, or if it does, whether Reynolds will still star. GREEN LANTERN’s raring to be a huge tent-pole which will inevitably lead to a trilogy that the star’s probably already contractually obligated to. Given the long shooting schedule’s for each installment, I imagine it’ll be tough to squeeze DEADPOOL in between. Plus, even if his enthusiasm for the ‘Pool doesn’t abate, Fox may be leery of keeping Reynolds along if he becomes more recognizable with a competing franchise.
Given the proud tradition of in-jokes in comics, I’m sure that, if Reynolds does get to be in both movies, few writers will resist linking Hal and Wade. Why, I remember an issue of FANTASTIC FOUR from right around the release of the SIN CITY movie where the Invisible Woman switched bodies with a stripper! A clever nod, of course, to Jessica Alba playing both Nancy Callahan and Sue Storm. Actually, such slyness might already be afoot! The timing’s a little tight, but if the introduction of the Deadpool Corps wasn’t intended to poke fun at this casting coincidence, than somebody’s needs to take credit for it. It’s too rich not to.
