Not What it Wants to Be
I don't know if the second issue was just genius or what, but this third issue pales in comparison to what came before. I do love me some Tony Moore. Just like his run on the Walking Dead, he captures things just right. He has a very cinematic approach.
My beef with this issue mainly falls on the approach to Deadpool. The first two issues paced him well. He had some zingers here, some butt-kicking there. It was nice. This issue has Deadpool popping off bad one-liners in every panel. Every panel! This is pure overkill. No book needs so many half-formed jokes. Deadpool is best when he delivers that one unexpected quip that really makes the reader pause to chuckle silently. This can happen a few times a book (like issue 2). Don't get me wrong, there were some great lines in this issue, but they get buried in bland stuff.
The big redeemer for this issue was the introduction of some deeper things. The mage has ties to S.H.I.E.L.D. (Dr. Strange's quip here was excellent.) Dr. Strange sees something off with Deadpool and whispers it to him. Ben Franklin is real. Deadpool will break the fourth wall (though I don't think his first time in this series went off that great).
Judging by the first two issues I'll hope that this one was just an anomaly. The creators have shown that they can deliver solid books and I eagerly anticipate more of better quality. This one just fell a little flat.
