Messy but not bad.
This is the first issue in the four part series by James Kuhoric and Jason Shawn Alexander.
The writing is pretty good and intriguing but I really hope they explain more about the characters. It's a bit messy, but for the unclarity I blame the artwork.
Is it just me or does every supernatural western story remind you of "The Dark Tower" novel series by Stephen King?
At first I looked at the art and was like: "Oh yeah, this looks cool." but as I read further it became really hard to tell character one from another. The art looks cool and stylistic but it's very impractical. It's too messy to be easily understood. I had no problems telling the bald sheriff from the only woman in the book, Annie Belle but when there are two (most of the time more) cowboys with greasy hair, beard stubble, wearing a hat and frowning with their unexpressive faces it's rather difficult to tell them apart.
I actually wish they had switched the cover artist (Jae Lee) with the story artist (Jason S. Alexander) because now the cover is a lot more clear than any panel inside when the cover is the part that can have the "style over substance" concept succesfully applied.
Overall, I liked it and I will probably read the next one but I'm not sure I would recommend it. For the first issue I would want a bit more character establishing and more exposition.
